-(Leaf anatomy in young plants of Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil. (Solanaceae)). Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil. is a widely distributed and well adapted shrub of cerrado areas in Brazil. Anatomic studies of the leaves of 60 days old plants obtained from seeds germinated at the greenhouse were carried out. Transversal and paradermal sections were prepared using the usual microthecniques. Both leaf surfaces are covered with simple glandular and non-glandular trichomes, and stellate trichomes. At front sight, the walls of the epidermal cells are sinuous with stomata occurring on both upper and lower surfaces. At cross-section it is observed that the epidermis consists of a single layer of cells and the mesophyll is dorsiventral. The palisade parenchyma consists of a single layer of cells and the parenchyma which is faced to abaxial surface is shaped by three to five layers of cells with compact arrangement. The results constitute a basic reference for further studies about this species, on this stage of development.Key words -early growth, histology, "lobeira", savanna RESUMO -(Anatomia foliar em plantas jovens de Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil. (Solanaceae)). Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil.
PEROLA SUBMITTED TO DIFFERENT CONCENTRATION OF AMMONIUM SULPHATE ABSTRACT -The present research aimed to analyze chlorophyll a fluorescence emission as well as chlorophyll levels in Ananas comosus (L. Merril) cv Pérola grown under greenhouse conditions and submitted to four concentration of nitrogen, through addition or not of ammonium sulphate according to the following treatments: T 0 = 0.000; T 1/2 = 0.015; T 1 =0.030; and T 2 = 0.060 g/kg soil. Determinations of minimum (F 0 ), maximum (F m ), variable (F v ), and terminal (F t ) fluorescence and maximum photochemical efficiency (F v / F m ) of dark-adapted leaves were realized during the day, five days after the second application of ammonium sulphate, carried out 120 days after the transplant. The results showed that the addition of ammonium sulphate affected variable and maximum fluorescence, but not minimum and terminal fluorescence neither the photochemical efficiency. There were significant alterations in relation to the time of the day in which the fluorescence was read. Differences in leaf chlorophyll concentration were significant among treatments in relation to variations of ammonium sulphate concentration, with increase for chlorophyll a, total and to the ratio chlorophyll a/b, but not for chlorophyll b.
-(Change in osmotic potential and soluble carbohydrates levels in Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil. in response to water stress). Solanum lycocarpum is a typical species from the "cerrado" vegetation in Central Brazil and has shown drought resistance under environmental conditions. Osmotic adjustment refers to a decrease in osmotic potential caused by accumulation of solutes and the continuous accumulation of solutes must occur in tissues to maintain the water potential gradient necessary for cell enlargement and turgor maintenance. The influence of water stress on osmotic potential and soluble carbohydrate levels was investigated in this research. The analyses of the results showed a decrease in osmotic potential in response to water stress. An increase in the carbohydrate levels was observed in plants under stress conditions in greenhouse. Reducing sugars were the major contributors to soluble carbohydrates levels detected in leaves and roots. These results suggested that Solanum lycocarpum plants showed a mechanism of adaptation to survival in water stress conditions.RESUMO -(Alteração no potencial osmótico e teor de carboidratos solúveis em plantas jovens de lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil.) em resposta ao estresse hídrico).
Palavras-chave -Solanum lycocarpum, lobeira, crescimento inicial, cerrado ABSTRACT -(Growth of seedlings of Solanum /ycocarpllm SI. Hil. (lobeira) in greenhouse). The effect of water availability on the early growth of So/anllm /ycocarpum (Solanaceae) was investigated in seedlings growing in a greenhouse. On the seventh day after planting they were submitted to two different water treatments: TI with more and T2 with less water availability. On the fifteenth day after planting, seedlings showed a gerrnination percentage of 6.8 for T I and 15.9 in T2. [n both treatments the root [ength was greater than the height of the shoot, although the dry weight of the shoot was twice fold that of the roots. These results indicate an adaptive characteristic of the species to a water shortage.
