BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms and the associated factors in the elderly of a city in southern Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study performed in residential homes, with probabilistic cluster sample, interviewed and examined 287 seniors aged from 65 to 74 years in the city of Cruz Alta, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Fonseca Anamnestic Index was used for temporomandibular dysfunction analysis, as well as a structured questionnaire for socioeconomic conditions and an oral health clinical examination. Either Chisquare or Mann-Whitney tests assessed associations between the dependent and independent variables and presented by frequency distribution. Uni-and multivariate analyses were performed to verify the association between temporomandibular dysfunction risk and explanatory variables. For all statistical analyses, a 5% significance level was adopted. RESULTS: The prevalence of temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms was 55.1%. In the final multivariate model, age ≥70 years (RP=0.674; 95% CI: 0.516-0.881) showed as a protection factor against temporomandibular dysfunction, and the average of tooth loss (RP=1.022; 95% CI: 1.004-1.039) showed as a risk factor for temporomandibular dysfunction in relation to their respective controls. Objective: to identify the meaning of aging as perceived by the elderly and their relatives. Method: an exploratory, descriptive and qualitative study was carried out in 2014, based on semi-structured interviews with eight elderly participants of a social group and five relatives of elderly people. The information was synthesized using Bardin’s content analysis, from the description of the subjects’ speech in terms of units of significance. Results: content analysis revealed two thematic categories: the meaning of aging in the perception of the elderly and human aging in the understanding of the relatives. Conclusion: the perceptions of the interviewees regarding aging refer to successful, dignified and active aging, with autonomy, independence and the possibility of accomplishment, considering the specificities and difficulties of understanding the process of living and coexistence between family members. The caregivers reported concerns about the future of the elderly in terms of health, dependence, and physical, psychic and social limitations, with a combination of positive and negative feelings, but recognized their responsibility of care.

ResumoO presente estudo buscou conhecer as condições que facilitam e dificultam o aprendizado do uso do computador observado por alunos de um grupo de terceira idade que fizeram parte de um projeto de inclusão digital. Tratou-se de um estudo quantitativo, longitudinal e descritivo, com a aplicação de um questionário estruturado com perguntas fechadas aos 19 alunos de faixa etária igual ou superior a 50 anos sobre as dificuldades e facilidades do uso do computador. As principais condições facilitadoras apontadas pelos participantes referiram-se às atitudes do professor no processo de aprendizagem, o bom relacionamento entre os alunos e o professor e as novas amizades que surgiram durante o curso consideradas motivadoras do aprendizado. A dificuldade de memória constituiu-se na condição dificultadora mais apontada pelos alunos. Concluiu-se, que a atividade com o computador pode se tornar prazerosa e estimuladora através das novas amizades, do bom relacionamento entre os alunos e o professor proporcionando o processo de aprendizagem. Significando um crescimento mais elevado da população idosa com relação aos demais grupos etários (CAMARANO, 2002). Estima-se que, no ano de 2030, o número de idosos poderá chegar a setenta milhões nos países desenvolvidos. No Brasil, as projeções para o ano de 2025, indicam que a população total aumentará cinco vezes em relação à de 1950. Segundo dados do Ministério da Saúde, a população brasileira idosa, em 1996, era de 7,8 milhões, e entre 1950 e 2020, esta estatística crescerá 16 vezes o número de pessoas acima de sessenta anos de idade no país (LACOURT e MARINI, 2006; FILHO et al., 2006).Passerino e Pasqualotti (2006) relatam que o envelhecimento humano compreende todos os processos de transformação do organismo, tanto físicos quanto psicológicos e sociais, envolvendo principalmente papeis sociais desempenhados pelos indivíduos.Nessa perspectiva, as implicações que o envelhecimento humano traz aos indivíduos podem ser sintetizadas considerando os seguintes aspectos: aparecimento de rugas e progressiva perda da elasticidade da pele; diminuição da força muscular, da agilidade e da mobilidade das articulações;

Objetivo: Analisar a qualidade de vida de idosos frequentadores de oficinas de informática (OINFO). Métodos: Participaram 92 indivíduos na terceira idade, divididos em dois grupos: grupo I composto por 23 frequentadores de OINFO, e grupo II constituído por 69 sujeitos, que não participavam de OINFO. Utilizaram-se como instrumentos um questionário sociodemográfico e a escala de qualidade de vida WHOQOL-Bref. Os dados foram analisados no programa SPSS® (versão 17.0). Objective: To identify the different perceptions of the aging process and violence in intrafamilial relations of elderly participants of a social and coexistence group. Method: An exploratory and descriptive qualitative study was performed through the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, with seven elderly people participating in the Coexistence and Strengthening of Bonds social group. The results of the discourses were assessed through thematic content analysis. Results: The extraction into thematic units allowed the elaboration of two intertwined categories: self-perception of the process of intrafamily aging and violence in the eyes of the elderly. Conclusion: The elderly reported that the family is responsible for providing care, appreciation and understanding, and that the aging process brings new possibilities for coexistence, but it is also accompanied by weaknesses and limitations. They also indicated subtle practices of psychological, financial, and abandonment violence, making them impotent, ashamed, and fearful to adopt effective initiatives to restore cordial, ethical, and harmonious family relationships.
