An extended study was made to evaluate reasons why patients terminate treatment prematurely. 13 clinics participated during a period of 3 months. A predictive test battery and 6 research hypotheses were used to differentiate patients terminating therapy prematurely from those who remain in treatment. An item analysis supported 4 of the hypotheses. Compared to those who terminate, those who remain in therapy tend to be more anxious, self-dissatisfied, willing to explore personal problems, less likely to have antisocial history, dependable, more controlled and persistent in tasks undertaken.
Research on television and behavior in the 1970s has recently been reviewed and evaluated in a two-volume report from the National Institute of Mental Health. The general conclusion is that television is an important influence on child development in ways well beyond earlier findings that focused on violence and aggression. Despite these findings, no industry change seems forthcoming and none is likely until some continuing process is developed for translating knowledge into action.
