This article dicusses the gender struggle of Shauzia in Mud City by Ellis. The struggle implies the gender condition and critical point of view of the author based on the theory of representation and gender oppression. The representation theory based on Stuart Hall helps to uncover the dominating cultural codes which oppress Shauzia as a person while the gender theory contributes to analyze the layer of dominationin the level of individual, interactional and institutional. This study results in several findings as:the cultural codes represented in the novel are giving benefit the man by the power of military and powerful patriarchy where Shauzia finds hard to go out from camp and work as woman. Furthermore, gender theory plays on scrutinizing the idea as individual woman lacks of rights, and influence her interactional competence as well to stay inside the compound. The institutional system determines her exixtence only to accept what the compound has given to her and not more. Thus she is rejected when she wants to go to France. Ellis poses her self to tell the reader that the value of women in Afganistan at war is unworthy compare to what happens in Europe.

This article deals with the representation of critical nationalism discourse in Banyuwangian music in the New Order era. By juxtaposing representation and hegemony theory which emphasizes textual-contextual reading, we will analyze the constructions of local metaphors we assume supporting the establishment of nationalism. Such constructions intertwined with the mobilization of the uniqueness of local cultures that contributed to establishing the national culture through which nationalism got its “nutrition”. However, some songwriters constructed critical nationalism by representing unique metaphors related to the characteristics of subaltern subjects that in the midst of their problems songwriters still have, in their silence, critical view toward the ruling faction, without negating their responsibility to guard the nation. The representation of critical nationalism using local metaphors is a critique of the social and economic problems caused by the injustice of development programs as well as a creative strategy to negotiate Using cultures in the midst of modernity.

COVID-19 is still a problem in the world and has an impact, especially on the education sector. The government's policy in the education sector is to allow online learning at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, there are obstacles experienced by students, such as a lack of interaction with teachers so that learning motivation decreases, students feel bored, and the use of technology during learning at home is low. The Community Service Program, which was attended by Jember University students in Pesanggaran Village, Banyuwangi Regency, was presented as a solution to reduce the problems of the student learning process at home. The learning innovation implemented is AKSY (Active, Creative, Healthy, and Happy), which aims to increase students' motivation and enthusiasm for learning at home and maximize the fun learning process while still complying with the COVID-19 protocol. The methods of real-world lecture activities are participant observation, interviews, and literature studies. Through the implementation of the program, there are benefits achieved by students, namely increasing knowledge and target awareness of the implementation of the COVID-19 protocol while studying at home. Students become very happy, so that motivation and enthusiasm for learning at home increase. Students can also develop their potential and creativity.
