This study analyzed qualitatively the cohesive devices used in argumentative essays of undergraduate EFL students in South Sumatera, Indonesia. Eighty essays were collected from eight universities in which ten essays were obtained from each. Halliday and Hasan (1976) concept of grammatical cohesion was used as the framework for the analysis of the essays. All the cohesive devices were found. Reference had the highest frequency which is 50.24% of the total cohesive devices followed by conjuction which is 37.34%, lexical cohesion which is 7.7% and ellipsis which is 3.57%. Substitution was the least used type of cohesive device which is only 1.15%. In terms of correctness of using the devices, most of the devices were all used properly. It was revealed that there was still few mistakes of using reference and substitution since they both were frequently used in the essays. Hence, it can be concluded that the students are more familiar with the use of reference and conjunction even though they are able to use the other devices as well.Keywords: cohesive devices, argumentative essay
ICT is tools or medias that facilitate teaching and learning process in the classroom. ICT includes software application, computers, radio, television, telephony, CD ROM, audio or video clips, computer, and internet. Utilizing this technology is not improve students’ achievement but also their character, especially language ethic. Students’ language ethic has relationship to linguistics aspects. In semantics, the study tells about how polite language used to communicate with other people in the real context. In pragmatics, the study tells about how polite language used to communicate with older and younger people based on the situation. There were some words and expressions can be used and can be not used to communicate with other people. One way to teach semantics and pragmatics was used ICT in the calssroom. Using ICT that input islamic value can develop the students’ character indirectly. Hopefully, all of the English Lecturer using ICT as English Teaching Media at Islamic University.
In today’s digital world, technology has contributed to an expanded understanding of literacy. Besides having literacy skills, today’s students – millennials - also need technology skills for communicating, investigating, accessing, and using information, thinking critically about messages inherent in new media. Teachers and staff development need to learn the use of technology as well as guiding and opening the students’ perspective where the technology will help them to support the Muslim world. The use of ICT is not only to create the generation with the advanced knowledge in technology but also to have the Islamic character in the future. It is bringing about new opportunity for educators, because it can provide powerful support to educational innovation in creating future generation with Islamic characters. In short, this article is mainly about how the convergence of both literacy instruction and ICT in staff development can help in promoting future generation with Islamic characters. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui bentuk kerja sama kepala sekolah dan guru dalam Meningkatkan Efektifitas Proses Pembelajaran di SD Negeri Kecamatan Bukit Kerman, untuk mengetahui langkah-langkah kepala sekolah dan guru dalam menciptakan Meningkatkan Efektifitas Proses Pembelajaran di SD Negeri Kecamatan Bukit Kerman. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, dalam penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian yang bersifat kualitatif, yaitu mendeskripsikan data-data yang diperoleh di lapangan. Sedangkan teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, dokumentasi dan wawancara. Sedangkan langkah-langkah yang dapat dilakukan menciptakan komunikasi yang baik dan nyaman di antara sesama, saling menghargai, dan mementingkan prinsip transparan dan akuntabilitas, bekerjasama dalam melaksanakan program dan Meningkatkan Efektifitas Proses Pembelajaran di SD Negeri Kecamatan Bukit Kerman terbentuk melalui rangkaian perilaku antara orang yang memberikan kepercayaan dan orang yang dipercayakan. The aims of this study were to find out investigate what EFL teachers do to developing their pedagogical competence in teaching implementation. The participants of this study were English teachers in SMP Xaverius 3 Palembang. Qualitative method was used in this study. The data gained from interview was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The study applied purposive sampling. The result of the study showed that the English teachers join some activities and programs as the efforts of developing their pedagogical competence. To increase the knowledge of classroom management, teachers usually did induction programs. Teachers also should join many kind of seminars, workshops, short courses or teacher trainings related to teaching in order to develop their knowledge of teaching methods. Teachers can develop their knowledge of classroom assessment by joining seminars, workshop, reading books or articles, watching youtube, and using other platforms. Lesson study activities are used by teachers to help them making lesson plan.
