Good learning can maximize the potential of students through various active and fun activities. No exception for equality education in the form of the package A equivalent elementary school program. But in reality learning in the Package A program still experiences various problems, especially in problem-solving abilities that apply mathematical concepts through higher levels of thinking. It can be seen from the low it results that the achievement of problem-solving ability averages less than 20%. This finding is supported by the lack of understanding of educators in terms of implementation, age diversity students, and the content standard is quite dense while learning activities are less than optimal providing meaningful experiences. For this reason, one form of learning that can be done with the right learning approach, one of which is RME. This approach will integrate mathematical problem solving abilities into its application.
In non-formal classroom during their waiting time in transit, refugees often found it difficult to have dynamic teamwork with others from diverse sociocultural. Things considered small stuffs for some turned out to be a problematic issue to others. Their various background; home countries, ethnicities, previous socioeconomic status added to the exclusion and specific group connection with tendency of being unsettled when they were obligated to mix with their fellows outside their comfort group. Even though most of these people have experienced in moving around from one country into another, their marginal life was not a much of help to their socialization with people outside of their community. Promoting multicultural education which values diversity and includes the perspectives of a variety of cultural groups on a regular basis took longer time to decrease prejudice, tolerate changing habits and eliminate gender bias.
Poverty is still a serious issue worlwide including in Indonesia. One important way to address it is by providing education by the government. However, the government alone cannot address the problem satisfactorily, and, therefore, it needs non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to assist. One of these type of NGOs is Yayasan Penyantun dan Pembina Anak Cacat (YPPAC) Kasih Bundo. This NGO assists the government by providing a non-formal education by establishing Pusat Kegiatan Belajar Masyarakat (PKBM) Kasih Bundo (The Kasih Bundo Study Centre for the Community). This article reports a study on this NGO, focusing on what it has done and what it has successfully achieved by looking at the social and economic background of their families. The result suggests that the NGO has successfully assisted the government in a significant manner.
