STUDY OF MECHANISMS AND PREVENTIVE MEASUREMENTS OF STAIN FORMATION IN GALVANIZED STEELS Abstract Moisture in temporary protective oils and hardening solution, as well as uncontrolled in the pH of demineralized water, used in washing the steel before oiling, can cause stains on the surface of zinc coated steels. Transport and storage conditions on customers can also cause stains. These stains have a strong visual impact, its can causes doubts in the application of steels. For this reason, some measures are used in Usiminas to prevent stains, such as moisture controls in the oil storage tank, the pH of the demineralized water and the storage time between the hardening and the finishing of the steels. In the present study, the effect of these parameters on the formation of stains in zinc coated steel was investigated, using samples with simulated stains in the laboratory. Techniques were used to characterize the samples, such as atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy). In the end, was proposed mechanisms for the formation of stains that would be related to the surface oxidation of the coating.
THE PHOSPHATIZATION, PAINTING AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF GALVANIZED STEELS WITH STAINS ON THE SURFACE AbstractThe temporary protective oils and the oxidation processes can cause stains on the surface of zinc coated steels. These stains have a strong visual impact and cannot always be removed by the phosphatization pre-treatments. Because of this, the industrial application of these steels may be damaged. In order to investigate these effects laboratory simulations of the zinc layer staining were performed on electrogalvanized and hot dip galvanized steels, using the reactions with temporary protective oil and with atmospheric moisture during storage. Samples with and without stains were processed at an automotive painting line. It was observed that stains from the reaction with temporary protective oil do not affect the phosphate layer morphology and final appearance of the dry paint film. However, the stains due to the oxidation of the zinc layer affect the phosphate layer morphology and the final appearance of the dry paint film. It was also found that the oxidation of zinc layer can impair the corrosion resistance of the steel. Key words: Galvanized steel; Stains; Corrosion.
PRE-TREATMENTS, PAINTING AND STEEL CORROSION RESISTANCE OF HOT DIPPING GALVANIZED STEEL WITH L TREATMENT* AbstractThe steel coated with zinc and its alloys are widely used in automobiles, due to their excellent corrosion resistance. Depending on the severity of forming during the stamping process, damage may occur to the coating layer. To avoid this problem, several lubricating treatment methods have been developed, for example, L Treatment, which is a film P-Mn based patented by Nippon Steel Corporation and Sumitomo Metal and available in Brazil by Unigal Usiminas. After stamping the steel is subjected to various processes to obtain the final product, besides having a good lubricity is essential that such treatments does not interfere in the next steps. In this work, samples of the hot dip galvanized steel, with Zn-Fe alloys (GA), with and without L Treatment were painted in an industrial line after pre-treatments phosphating and zirconium base, and then evaluated by cyclic accelerated and non-accelerated corrosion tests. It has been found that the L Treatment did not interfere of pre-treatments, paint and corrosion resistance of the steel, therefore it can be used to improve the stamping of steel.
METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF IDEAL PARAMETERS OF PROCESSING CATAPHORETIC PAINTING AbstractIn order to reduce the costs and weight of vehicles, a great variety of materials, metallic or not, has been used in car body production. Each material has a specific critical voltage for cataphoretic paint application (rupture voltage), and taking in account that all them are painted simultaneously, it is very important achieve a homogenous final painting in the whole car. Usually, the paint application voltage is determined by the available time, and does not consider the paint's type, which, in many cases, restricts the use of certain metallic substrates. Therefore, the establishment of "processing windows" for painting dissimilar material at the same time allows more operational flexibility. In this work, samples of steels, galvanized or not, were painted in a pilot line using three types of paints and varying application voltage and time, so that it was possible to establish a "processing window" for each steel depending on the paint used. The "processing windows" provide greater flexibility to the processes of painting, besides being a convenient way to select the best paint performance for a specific line.
