ABSTRACTOwing to the importance of teaching Building Information Modeling (BIM) to future architects and civil engineers, several universities have shown an interest in introducing this subject in the curriculum. However, as BIM is a relatively new subject, it is not yet clear to everyone how this subject should be regarded. Some universities have adopted a strategy of conducting research to find out the opinions of lecturers, students and professionals, so that their decisions can have academic support. This study includes a literature review on the pilot projects that some academic institutions have carried out before introducing BIM into their curriculum. On the basis of information gathered from the literature review, an investigation was carried out into the views of lecturers who were running two courses at a Brazilian public university to find out their attitudes to BIM education. This research included an analysis of the curriculum and an online questionnaire which was answered by the lecturers. The results were examined and discussed and in the end a plan was put forward for a revised curriculum which incorporated some
This paper reports on some of the activities of a larger study whose overall objective is to propose an optimized configuration for the infrastructure of a BIMbased design coordination room. A methodology for capturing and analyzing the communication pattern among project participants inside a coordination room is presented. Understanding which participant actions ordinarily occur during design coordination meetings is necessary for providing adequate infrastructure support for them. Accordingly, twenty paper-based design coordination meetings were analyzed. Results indicated that text creation (note taking) and floor plan visualization are the most frequent actions by the most usual meeting participants (coordinator, architect and owner). By mapping user's needs to devices capabilities, it can be concluded that a large display device, such as an interactive projection screen, may support the majority of actions required from the infrastructure of a coordination meeting room.
CIM. IFC. AbstractFollowing efforts from industry on the Building Information Modeling (BIM) paradigm in extending Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) to infrastructure, and from academia with studies on integration of BIM and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), it is considered the relevance of this scenario in the future development of a City Information Modeling (CIM). This scenario translates in the search for the appropriate model that captures the semantics and geometric representation of objects that belongs to the context of a city. Semantics is the most important part, as it allows for the application of the model to different types of analysis and simulations. This article will treat specifically of the initiatives of the buildingSMART to introduce roads, tunnels, bridges, and earthwork in IFC4, which are in common accord with CityGML and InfraGML/LandXML from Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). In this manner, it will be discussed the literature focused in the integration of BIM and GIS to analyze the impact of these solutions to the future of CIM. The work constitutes itself in a theoretical discussion, of exploratory character, to understand the possible ways in the development of CIM.
In view of the importance of teaching BIM concepts and tools to architecture and civil engineering students, a number of schools have sought to introduce this subject into their curriculum. However, as the curriculum is already overloaded, with little space for new courses, a useful strategy is to spread the BIM material over various courses. This paper proposes a tool that assists teachers in planning courses with BIM content. It consists of a survey that sets out criteria to help teachers determine whether or not the course is appropriate for the inclusion of BIM material and what should form its syllabus. This instrument is divided into four parts: (a) course information; (b) defining the objectives of teaching BIM; (c) making recommendations to the professor on the most appropriate level of BIM proficiency for the course, BIM tools and applications, pre-requisites, projects to be carried out and collaboration types to be taught and; (d) a graph to show what BIM specialist areas are addressed in the course. The following factors were taken into account in devising this tool: the program (Architecture or Civil Engineering); the year in which the course is offered in the curriculum; the uses of BIM; BIM concepts and BIM skills. The proposed tool will be employed in the analysis of the syllabuses of courses of the Architecture and Civil Engineering programs of a Brazilian university. Courses involving Information Technology (Digital Graphic Representation, Design Studio and Project Management) will be selected first to improve and refine the instrument.
