Benedicto do E.S. de Campos 3 ABSTRACT. STIMULATION OF SPERMIATlON WITH HORMONAL INJECTIONS lN THE CUR IMBATÁ PROCHILODUS SCROFA (STEINDACIINER) (OSTIIEICIITIIYES, CIIARACIFORMES, PROCIIILODONTIDAE). Sperm of 180 three year old males of curimbatá, Proehilodus serolo (Stei ndachner, 188 1), was collected to verify the possibility of utilization of these males more than one time, and to know how long afier the hormonal induction would occur the highest production of milt. This experiment was carried out in 1991 and 1992. Afier sperm was collected, each mal e was stimulated by the first injection offive IU/g ofhCG. Then, milt was collected at 8,16,24,48,72 and 96 hours before and afier the first dose and at 16 hours before and afieI' the second one. Mean volume values were, before hormonal injection, 0.22ml and afie r two doses of hCG , 1.06ml. Maximal production occurred between 16 and 24 hours afier induction. Mean values of sperm concentration and total number of sperm were, before hormonal induction, 3 1.16xI 06/ mm3 and 6.79x l0 9 and afier two doses, 21.46xI0 6 /mm 3 and 22. 15x I0 9 , respectively. There were no stati stical ditTerences between males receiving two or one doses of hCG concerning fertilizatio n. Results indicated that males of Proehilodus serolo may be induced a second time 14 days apart, what increases their reproductive efficiency.
