LOW CARBON STEEL WIRE DRAWING THROUGH UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE AbstractThe process of wire drawing is widely used in the metal industry for the manufacture of automotive axles, mechanical components, steel cables for the fishing industry, railroad tracks, nails, screws, etc. The knowledge and control of process parameters such as the coefficient of friction, wire drawing strength, stress and strain can contribute to a better quality of the product and in achieving a cleaner process, which reduces energy consumption and unnecessary losses. This paper aims at analyzing and measuring the necessary strength to wire drawing an area reduction in the manufacturing process of low carbon steel wire, through an Emic® universal testing machine adapted to the process and the construction of a device to hold the draw die. In addition, this paper aims to indicate Coulomb's coefficient of friction (µ) for the process using the value of the wire drawing strength obtained during experiments using the theoretical equation of Siebel.
LOW CARBON STEEL WIRE DRAWING PROCESS SIMULATION AbstractSince the sixties, with the development of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and its application through computational methods, the numerical simulation is one of the most used tools to acquire a better knowledge of the manufacturing process, and it also suggests improvements to process parameters. The use of numerical simulation allows to avoid unnecessary expenses and losses, investments in costly prototypes and tests, as well as to improve the quality of the finished product. This paper compares the values of the required wire drawing strength to produce low carbon steel wire, for only one reduction step, measured by the finite element method and the Siebel equation. With this paper was obtained the computational modeling of the wire drawing process, comparison between the methods for measuring the wire drawing strength, better understanding of the wire drawing process and the mechanical properties of drawn wires.
