The African snail Achatina fulica is one of the 100 most harmfull invasive alien species, causing serious damages mainly in islands. We had as objective to characterize the population of A. fulica in Ilha Rasa, Guaraqueçaba, Paraná, Brazil. Seasonal and diurnal collections of A. fulica and associated fauna were driven in the border and interior forest, sandbank, swamp and urban area of Almeida and Ilha Rasa communities. We collected 959 snails, with an average of 66.4 animals for inspected place, being considered that there is around 9,000 snails in the island. However the frequency of the animals was conditioned the time of the year, size of the animal and community. The small and recent population of A. fulica associated to the anthropic environment demands an urgent and effective plan of eradication avoiding its establishment and the dispersion for the wild areas. Coletas sazonais diurnas da A. fulica e fauna associada foram conduzidas na borda e interior de floresta, restinga, mangue e área urbana das comunidades de Almeida e Rasa. Foram coletados 959 caramujos, com uma média de 66,4 animais vivos por terreno vistoriado, estimando-se que haja em torno de 9.000 caramujos na ilha. No entanto a freqüência dos animais esteve condicionada a época do ano, tamanho do animal e comunidade. A pequena e recente população de A. fulica associada ao ambiente antrópico demanda um plano de erradicação urgente e eficaz evitando o seu estabelecimento e a dispersão para as áreas nativas. O molusco exótico Achatina fulica é classificado como uma das piores espécies invasoras do mundo, sendo considerado sério problema ambiental, de saúde pública e econômico. A espécie ocorre associada a ambientes alterados, porém a sua presença em áreas de preservação, principalmente em ilhas, pode causar sérios danos ambientais, sendo urgentemente necessário o seu extermínio. Desta forma, o presente estudo teve como objetivo diagnosticar a ocorrência do caramujo africano em Guaraqueçaba. Foi realizado um levantamento dos locais de ocorrência da espécie em diferentes comunidades e em Guaraqueçaba sendo caracterizado o sítio de ocorrência e feita a estimativa do tamanho da população. O caramujo ocorre em grandes quantidades na Ilha Rasa, Ilha das Peças e Superagui. Na cidade de Guaraqueçaba, foram coletados 3.507 animais em três dias de amostragem, o que possibilitou estimar que haja mais de 3.000 caramujos em toda área urbana. As características locais e o registro do conhecimento da população a respeito tanto do caramujo exótico quanto dos nativos, foram fundamentais para subsidiar uma proposta de manejo, que deve envolver a sensibilização da comunidade para o problema e a conscientização de que eles são os atores principais dessa ação.

ABSTRACT. Evaluation of the problems faced in the management of the giant African snail Achatina fulica (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) in Brazil. The giant African snail Achatina fulica Bowdich, 1822 was introduced into Paraná, Brazil, in the 1980s. Since then, it has spread across the country, despite its known invasive status on a global scale. The main objective of this study was to assess the problems faced in the management of the giant African snail. To accomplish that, we gathered and analyzed information available on the internet, scientific databases, field studies, as well as interviews and consultations with official agencies, NGOs, museums, the scientific community and people that coexist with the species.Despite the fact that extensive information has been generated regarding A. fulica (1,340 articles, 65 summaries in national annals, 40,700 pages on the internet), essential to promote control measures to hinder the propagation of this species, the majority of the available information remains inaccessible to the world at large. Moreover, the environmental, economic and health impacts of this species remain unclear, which may contribute to discouraging the initiation of management actions. Finally, control measures are still inefficient due to the generalist profile of this species and the lack of knowledge concerning its biology and ecology. Thus, in conclusion, even though A. fulica has been an invasive species for over a century in many other countries, it is difficult to find evidence supporting the need to subsidize its management. This may be an indication that many other, poorly known exotic species will have time and the proper conditions to become established and cause problems before they come to be recognized as invasive.

The giant African snail Achatina fulica is frequently found in antropic environments in different Brazilian municipal districts, which leads to consider the possibility that its establishment is associated to disturbed habitats. For this reason, the objective set in this paper is to diagnose the occurrence and the population characteristics of the invasive snail in an Atlantic forest fragment in the municipal district of Morretes of the State of Paraná. Although the fragment is a secondary forest, few species of non-native vegetation were found there, and the area is characterized by great floristic diversity. There were collected 396 snails and large spacing was registered between the animals. The animals were found in activity and mainly on the ground during the whole morning period, which provides evidence of expanded forage periods. Results suggest that the animals present in the native forest fragment constitute a recently arrived population, resultant mainly of the saturation of disturbed areas under human influence. This implies urgency for measures to control and decrease populations of giant African snails in urban areas as a way to avoid invasion of natural forests.

O filo Mollusca constitui o segundo maior grupo zoológico conhecido pela ciência. Seus representantes conquistaram com êxito quase todos os ambientes naturais do planeta e são fundamentais para a manutenção do ecossistema em que estão inseridos. Os moluscos configuram entre os animais mais evidentes e intimamente relacionados à sociedade humana desde a pré-história até os dias atuais, sendo importantes como recurso econômico e vetores de doenças. A Malacologia, ciência que se ocupa do estudo sobre moluscos, têm avançado em nível global nas últimas décadas; porém, diante da diversidade e importância atribuída ao grupo, seu conhecimento pode ser considerado ainda incipiente. No Brasil não existe uma área prioritária para ser incrementada dentro da Malacologia e o recurso mais urgente para o desenvolvimento dessa ciência no país é a formação de pessoal especializado para manter e coordenar pesquisas e as coleções científicas.

Apresenta uma abordagem histórica sobre conceitos gerais de especiação e seus mecanismos, a partir das ideias primordiais até as teorias mais recentes que visam elucidar a origem da biodiversidade. Sabe-se que especiação é um tema polêmico e complexo que abrange praticamente todas as linhas de pesquisa dentro da biologia, além da geologia e da paleontologia. O objetivo principal do artigo é clarificar os conceitos teóricos sobre a origem das espécies animais, na ordem cronológica em que foram estabelecidos, ao longo do desenvolvimento da biologia evolutiva como ciência.
