Epidermoid cysts of the central nervous system are uncommon conditions, which are frequently located in the cerebellopontine angle and around the pons. They are covered with keratinized squamous epithelium and keratin lamella, which give its contents a soft, white-pearly appearance. Epidermoid cysts are mostly originated from malformations, presumably associated with surface elements of the nervous system ectoderm during the closure of the neural groove or formation of secondary cerebral vesicles. The authors describe a case of epidermoid cyst in the posterior fossa causing hydrocephalus and review morphologic and diagnostic criteria of this lesion.
Liesegang rings are concentric noncellular lamellar structures, rarely seen in vivo, occurring as a consequence of the accumulation of insoluble products in a colloidal matrix. These characteristic structures are a rare phenomenon usually found in association with cystic or inflammatory lesions and may be mistaken for parasites. The authors examined Liesegang rings from an inflammatory kidney lesion identified previously as a tumoral lesion on computerized tomography. On microscopic evaluation, Liesegang rings can be mistaken for eggs and larvae of parasites, psammoma bodies and calcification. Special stains like PAS, Grocott, von Kossa and Masson's trichrome facilitate the diagnosis.
Epi dermoid carcinomas represent from 90% to 95% of oral cavity malignant neoplasias, making up 13,470 cases/ year. Aims: To correlate p53 and Ki-67 expressions in mouth and tongue carcinomas with lymph node status, gender, histological grade, tumor volume and pathological stage.
Materials and Methods:We carried out a retrospective study of 28 cases of mouth and tongue epidermoid carcinomas. They were submitted to immunohistochemical study in order to check the expression of p53 and Ki-67 antibodies and statistically compare them in terms of lymph node status, gender, histological grade, tumor volume and pathological staging. Results: The individually analyzed p53 proved to have statistical significance (p<0.05) when compared to tumor volume (p=0.029). Despite a strong tendency, the p53/tumor volume relation was not significant. When p53 + Ki67 were analyzed, tumor volume had p < 0.05 (p = 0.029). Discussion: Literature shows that the expression of p53 and Ki-67 is related to the presence of metastasis to lymph nodes and a worse prognosis. Conclusion: In oral cavity and tongue epidermoid carcinomas, p53 and Ki-67 are related to larger tumors, metastasis to lymph nodes and very likely to a worse prognosis.
Background:Hemangiomas are benign vascular malformations that can involve the spine. Pure epidural hemangiomas are rare and represent only 4% of all epidural lesions. Most hemangiomas are of the cavernous type; the capillary variant is atypical, and only ten cases have been reported in the literature.Case Description:A 69-year-old female presented with nonspecific dorsal pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a spinal epidural tumor at the T9-T10 level. Following a T9-T11 laminectomy, the lesion was completely resected en bloc. Histopathologic analysis showed a pure epidural capillary hemangioma with adipose tissue mesenchyma. Conclusions:Although epidural capillary hemangiomas are extremely rare, they should be considered among the differential diagnoses of extradural, extramedullary spinal lesions. Further, they must be differentiated from other more common lesions such as meningiomas and schwannomas. The recommended surgical management is en bloc gross total excision.
There were no significant differences between p53 and Ki-67 immunoexpression in laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma, except in the group of patients with more than 50 years of age, when Ki-67 expression was significantly higher.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
