The present study was carried out to compare the growth curve, performance and carcass yield of two broiler strains, Paraíso Pedrês (PP) and ISA Label (ISA), raised in confined or semi-confined systems. It was used a completely randomized design with five replicates, consisting of 20 and 29 birds in semi-confined and confined systems, respectively. Semi-confined birds had free access to pasture at 28 days of age. Performance data were recorded weekly by building growth curves as well as calculating the growth rate. After reaching the recommended body weight (2.5 kg), male birds were slaughtered for physicochemical analysis of carcass, parts and organs. Semi-confined PP and ISA birds showed higher growth potential, higher weight gain, lower feed intake and better feed-to-gain ratio than confined birds. No interactions were observed for carcass yield and meat quality characteristics. Males presented higher yields of feet, drumstick, thigh, drumstick + thigh, and heart, while females presented higher breast and abdominal fat yield. Breast meat from ISA Label birds was more yellowish than from PP, whereas less soft meat was observed in semi-confined birds
Palavras-chave: exigência de energia, linhagem ISA Label, relação energia:proteína Metabolizable energy levels for slow growth male broilers raised in semi confined system ABSTRACT -Three trials were conducted to evaluate the metabolizable energy (ME) levels and the energy to protein ratio for slow growth male broilers raised in semi confined system in the starter (1 to 21), grower (22 to 49) and final phase (50 to 70 days old). In each experiment, 400 males ISA Label line in the raising phase were allotted to experimental installation constituted by 20 lots with cover area of 3.13 m 2 for feeding and gathering of the birds and a pasture area of 72.87m 2 . A completely randomized experimental design was used, with five levels of ME and four replications of 20 birds per experimental unit. The levels of metabolizable energy fed in the ration in the different phases varied in the starter from 2,600 to 3,200 kcal/kg, in the grower from 2,700 to 3,300 kcal/kg and in the final from 2,800 to 3,400 kcal/kg. The crude protein and other nutrients were maintained at the same level in all diets according to the NRC (1994) recommendations, for each phase. Ethanol extracts of mango as antioxidants for laying hensAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of ethanol extracts of mango seeds and peel on laying hen performance, egg quality, and egg lipid stability. A total of 180 Hisex White hens were randomly distributed in six treatments, with five replicates of six birds. The treatments consisted of: ration without antioxidant; ration with 200 ppm butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT); ration with 200 or 400 ppm of mango peel extract (Ecas); and ration with 200 or 400 ppm of mango seed extract (Ecar). Feed intake, egg production, egg weight, produced egg mass (gram by bird per day), feed conversion, and egg quality were evaluated. Yolk lipid oxidation during storage was determined by quantification of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. Birds fed diet without antioxidants produced eggs with the lowest Haugh unit values and the highest lipid oxidation of yolk. Ecas at 400 ppm and Ecar at 200 or 400 ppm were effective to prevent oxidative damage of eggs during storage and may be used in the diet of laying hens as a replacement for synthetic antioxidant.Index terms: Gallus gallus, Mangifera indica, natural antioxidant, magiferin, lipid oxidation, egg quality.
Resíduos do Caju. Maracujá. Melão. Urucum. Abacaxi. Acerola. ADDITIONAL KEYWORDS Cashew. Passion fruit. Melon. Bixa orellana. Pineapple. Acerola. SUMMARYIt was evaluated the carbohydrate and protein fractions of cashew, passion fruit, melon, Bixa orellana, pineapple and acerola by-products; it was estimated and valided the energy value of the feeds from the NRC (2001). The carbohydrate and protein fractions and TDN values changed substantially between by-products. It was concluded that the analysis of the carbohydrate and protein fractions of by-products must be laboratory routine. The observed and predict TDN values of the feeds by NRC (2001) equations were similar, being appropriate for estimating the energy value of the feeds.
Ethanol extracts of mango as antioxidants for broiler chickenAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the diet inclusion of ethanol extracts, obtained from mango seed and peel, on the performance of broilers and on the lipid oxidation of meat. Three hundred and sisty one-day-old male chicks of the strain Ross 308 were distributed in a completely randomized design, with six treatments and six replicates of ten birds. Treatments consisted of: diet without antioxidant (control); diet with addition of 200 ppm of the antioxidant butylhydroxytoluene (BHT); diet with 200 or 400 ppm extract of mango peel (ECAS); and diet with 200 or 400 ppm extract of mango seed (ECAR). The addition of BHT or mango extracts did not significantly affect feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion. The addition of BHT and of 400 ppm of ECAR provided low lipid oxidation in fresh meat, measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances before storage. Ethanol extract of mango seed, at 200 and 400 ppm dosage, delays lipid oxidation of chicken meat stored for 15 days.Index terms: Gallus gallus, Mangifera indica, natural antioxidants, mangiferin, lipid oxidation, meat quality.
A trial was conducted to evaluate quality of quail eggs from two companies (A and B) at two storage times (5 and 15 days after packing). A total of 480 eggs were kept at room temperature and distributed in a completely randomized design in 2x2factorial arrangement (companies and storage time). The results indicated that trays from company B presented higher weight, as well as mean egg weight. However, the eggs in trays from company A showed greater uniformity. Evaluating the external quality, we found that above 90% of eggshell were considered with total integrity, and no difference for this characteristic between companies was found. The eggs from company A presented lower average weight in comparison to those from company B, regarding storage time. No differences were observed between eggs from companies A and B for Haugh unit value. Storage time of 15 days after packing promoted reduction in Haugh unit value in comparison to those stored for 5 days. Quail eggs from company A presented lower variation in weight, although heavier eggs are produced by company B. Internal quality of quail eggs from both companies was similar. Storage time affected eggs quality.
Alternative feedstuff, Coturnix coturnix, kani rice, rice by product.Submitted: September/2013 Approved: March/2014 ABStRACt An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of broken rice inclusion as substitute for corn in the diet on the performance, carcass yield, and economic viability of meat-type quails between 7 and 49 days of age. A number of 288 quails was distributed according to a completely randomized design into six treatments with six replicates of eight birds each. Treatments consisted of increasing levels of broken rice (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) in replacement of corn. Increasing levels of corn substitution by broken rice in the diet of 7-to 49-day-old meattype quails did not affect feed intake, weight gain or feed conversion ratio (p>0.05). Relative to carcass traits, the inclusion of broken rice in the diets did not influence (p>0.05) dressing percentage or breast, leg (thigh+drumstick), liver, and gizzard yields. Moreover, feed cost per kilogram of live weight gain, cost index, and economic efficiency index were not influenced by the replacement of corn by broken rice in the diets. The performance, carcass traits and economic viability of broilers fed the different levels of broken rice inclusion were not different from the control group (p>0.05). These results indicate the economic viability of total replacement of corn by broken rice in the feeding of meat-type quails.
