This article presents some of the results obtained from our observation of three Secondary School Mathematics teachers pedagogical practice when they used mathematical language to teach "functions". From a qualitative data analysis some representative categories of conceptions raised in the classroom about the subject are proposed from the expressions effectively used by the teachers with their students. Some considerations are also raised on the relation between these conceptions and the use of a specific language to deal with "functions" in the teaching of Chemistry and Physics
We elect three themes – Perception about being a teacher, Dilemmas of the Practices, Reflection in and about the action – to illustrate the lived process, and conjecture if the developed activities contributed to the learning of teaching. This analysis showed that the most perceived problems by undergraduates were related to pupils’ indiscipline and demotivation in the classroom. The undergraduates had conceptions of teaching and learning guided by propositions and educational pedagogical aspects that seem to have overcome the traditional and mechanistic views of the teaching-learning processes. Such narrative practices afforded them the reflection on action, confronting their personal and professional dilemmas, revealing their perception about being a teacher. They leveraged the establishment of interrelationships between the learned theories, and their future activities to teach math. Also, we observe a maturing of undergraduates throughout their narratives, which proved to be a useful tool for their professional development as future teachers.keywords: Mathematics Education.
ABSTRACTThis report brings the experience of building the website of the Mathematics Teaching Laboratory at ICMC-USP, and its purposes for the initial and continuing training of teachers in this discipline. It also aims to disseminate this laboratory among the internal and external communities at USP, emphasizing the processes of teaching and learning through manipulations of material objects, based on theories of embodied cognition. Several researchers in Mathematics Education highlight these theories, and the importance of manipulating objects for the teaching of Mathematics. In this perspective, doing, touching, moving and seeing are essential actions for the development of mathematical thinking, from the initial stages to the learning of more advanced concepts and processes.
