Backgrounds. The production of free radicals has a role in the regulation of biological function, cellular damage, and the pathogenesis of central nervous system conditions. Epilepsy is a highly prevalent serious brain disorder, and oxidative stress is regarded as a possible mechanism involved in epileptogenesis. Experimental studies suggest that oxidative stress is a contributing factor to the onset and evolution of epilepsy. Objective. A review was conducted to investigate the link between oxidative stress and seizures, and oxidative stress and age as risk factors for epilepsy. The role of oxidative stress in seizure induction and propagation is also discussed. Results/Conclusions. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are involved in neuronal death and seizures. There is evidence that suggests that antioxidant therapy may reduce lesions induced by oxidative free radicals in some animal seizure models. Studies have demonstrated that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with chronic oxidative stress and may have an essential role in the epileptogenesis process; however, few studies have shown an established link between oxidative stress, seizures, and age.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feelings and expectations of mothers of preterm babies at discharge. METHODS: This descriptive study used Bardin's framework to collect data among 11 mothers of preterm babies from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Data were collected through interviews from December 2004 to January 2005. RESULTS: Four categories emerged: the moment of the discharge; mothers' knowledge and questions; mothers' preparation and orientation for discharge; and, mothers' desired orientation. CONCLUSION: Although mothers' experienced excitement and happiness at discharge, many reported being anxious and insecure on how to take care of their preterm babies.
ABSTRACT Technological advances in Neonatology have benefited the infant newborn who need a safe venous access.
The study aimed to identify, in a Rooming-in unit, diagnoses related to the phenomenon of breastfeeding according to the NANDA-I Taxonomy II. It was conducted a descriptive exploratory study involving 83 mothers and their babies in the period of February to April 2011. Data were collected by means of an instrument based on the Theory of Basic Human Needs and, after statistical analysis, presented in tables. The results showed that the most frequent nursing diagnosis was Effective breastfeeding, identified in 65 (78.3%) cases. It is estimated that the nursing diagnoses related to breastfeeding can contribute to nursing care so that it can be more targeted, in order to promote a more qualified, effective and human care.
The study aimed at implementing the nursing process for a post-partum woman with cardiomyopathy after cardiorespiratory arrest. We conducted a clinical case study, in an intensive care unit of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, in the period from September to October, 2005. The data were obtained after evaluation for elaboration of Nursing Diagnoses according to NANDA Taxonomy II, clinical judgment, intervention and goals. The nursing diagnoses found were: impaired verbal communication, decreased cardiac output, inefficient respiratory pattern, excessive volume of fluids, diarrhea, impaired physical mobility and deficit in selfcare. We highlighted the importance of the process as focus of the nurse's work in the clinic, in order to favor the patient's return to his family context as well as give credibility to the nurse's job.
