Evidence is presented suggesting that the in-hibitory effect of Concanavalin A on the neuraminidase activity of various strains of influenza A virus is dependent on the juxtaposition of the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens of the respective strains.
The inhibitory effect of proflavine on the hemagglutinins of Reo and ECHO viruses has been investigated. It was found that proflavine inhibited the hemagglutination of Reo viruses and ECHO 6′, but not the other ECHO viruses. Hemagglutination tests performed under different experimental conditions indicated that proflavine, as inhibitor, acted on the virus rather than on the receptors of erythrocytes and suggested a mutual inhibition phenomenon between the erythrocyte-agglutinating activity of proflavine and that of Reo viruses and ECHO 6′.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
