Phytosociological census of weeds in the sunflower cropAbstract -The objective of this work was to survey the weeds in the preharvest of the sunflower crop in growers field of the southwest regions of Goiás State (Chapadão do Céu, Jataí and Montividiu) and Chapadão do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Fifty one farms were evaluated, during the period of May to June, 2002, in a total of 583 m 2 of area. The weeds were identified and counted inside a square (1.0x1.0 m), applied in each area, in order to determine the frequency, density, abundance and relative importance. Volunteer soybean (Glycine max) and corn (Zea mays) are part of the weed species in sunflower crop in the area. The botanical families Poaceae, Asteraceae and Euphorbiaceae present larger number of species. The main weeds found in the area are, in decreasing order, Ageratum conyzoides, Chamaesyce hirta, Cenchrus echinatus, Bidens sp., Euphorbia heterophylla and Commelina benghalensis.
Palavras-chave: competição, fitossociologia, Helianthus annuus, infestação.ABSTRACT -A phytosociological survey of the weed communities present in sunflower crop was carried out during two distinct crop stages: early development and pre-harvest. Weed species were identified and quantified according to the inventory square method (1.0 x 1.0 m), using 12 m 2 of sampling per area surveyed. At each stage, the survey was carried out on 54 farms of six counties of the "cerrado" (savanna region, Central Brazil) and 38 farms of eight counties of the "Pampas" (region in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the Southernmost state in Brazil), which are the two main Brazilian sunflower production regions. Frequency, relative frequency, density, relative density, abundance, relative abundance, relative importance index, and similarity index were computed. A total of 60 weed species were identified, 17 of which were present in both regions. Asteraceae and Poaceae were the two main families among the 16 found. The main species present in the "cerrado" were Euphorbia heterophylla, Chamaesyce hirta, Ageratum conyzoides, Commelina benghalensis, Zea mays and Bidens sp. The most abundant species present in the State of Rio Grande do Sul were Bidens sp., Raphanus raphanistrum, Lolium multiflorum, Gnaphalium spicatum, Sonchus oleraceus, Euphorbia heterophylla, Sida rhombifolia, Digitaria sp. and Ipomea sp. Weed density was higher at pre-harvest than at the early stage of the crop, in both
Nine natural plant compounds were screened for phytotoxicity to Bidens pilosa L. a troublesome weed in field and plantation crops. The sensitivity of three other weed species to coumarin, the most active identified compound, was also evaluated. Coumarin, at a concentration of 500 microM, had little effect on germination and growth of Senna obtusifolia L., Euphorbia heterophylla L., and Ipomoea grandifolia L. when compared with its effects on B. pilosa L. In a concentration range of 10-100 microM, coumarin caused a dose-dependent inhibition of germination and growth of B. pilosa L. The measurements of some parameters of energy metabolism revealed that coumarin-treated root tissues exhibited characteristics of seedlings in an earlier stage of growth, including higher respiratory activity and higher activities of alcohol dehydrogenase and lipoxygenase. These results suggest that coumarin inhibition of germination and growth of B. pilosa L. was not a consequence of an impairment of energy metabolism. Rather, it seems to act as a cytostatic agent, retarding germination. At concentrations above 50 microM, coumarin increased lipoxygenase activity and the level of conjugated dienes of root extracts, suggesting that it may induce oxidative stress in seedling roots.

ABSTRACT Resistance of the weed wild poinsettia to ALS inhibitor herbicidesOne of the most efficient methods of weed control in agriculture is the use of selective herbicides. However, repetitive use of the same herbicide or herbicides having the same mechanism of action, has led to the appearance of weed biotypes which have developed resistance.
RESUMO -Um experimento para avaliação da competição relativa de espécies de plantas daninhas, em relação a cultivares de soja de ciclos vegetativo precoce and Embrapa-62 (median cycle), in Londrina, Parana, Brazil in 1998/99. Four Palavras-chave: Euphorbia heterophylla, Brachiaria plantaginea, Ipomoea grandifolia, Senna obtusifolia. ABSTRACT -An experiment was carried out to evaluate the relative weed species competition with two soybean cultivars of different maturation times,
Previous results obtained in soybean-wheat rotations under no-tillage conditions showed reductions in the seedbank of the weed species Commelina benghalensis, but no alteration in the seedbank of Acanthospermum hispidum in areas infested with Brachiaria plantaginea. Analyses of the soluble fraction of B. plantaginea indicated the predominance of aconitic acid (AA) among the aliphatic acids and ferulic acid (FA) among the phenolic acids. Laboratory bioassays using C. benghalensis and A. hispidum were carried out to evaluate phytotoxic effects of pure organic acid solutions and dilute extracts of B. plantaginea on seed germination, root development, and fungal germination. Solutions of AA and FA were prepared at 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 mM. Extracts of B. plantaginea were diluted to obtain concentrations of AA similar to those in the prepared solutions. Seeds were sown on 0.5% agar (containing AA, FA, or diluted extract) in plastic-covered receptacles and maintained in a germination chamber for 10 days. AA and FA solutions and the B. plantaginea extract reduced germination and root length, mainly of C. benghalensis. AA also stimulated the development of endophytic fungi (Fusarium solani), which had complementary adverse effects on C. benghalensis germination. FA and AA may play important roles in reducing the seedbank of some weed species, acting directly on germination and development and, indirectly, by stimulating endophytic fungi that alter germination.
Treatments of imazaquin 0,12, 0,15 (normal) and 0,30 kg./ha, and imazethapyr 0,1 (normal) and 0,2 kg/ha were arranged in a split-plot design. Six sowing dates (plots), including 0, 30, 60, 90 120 and 150 days after herbicide application (DAA) were arranged in blocks. Residual activity for corn (Pioneer 3072) was evaluated in the field, and for cucumber in a bioassay, in greenhouse. Corn plant phythotoxicity was visually evaluated and dry weight were recorded as well as dry weight and height for cucumber plants. Imazaquin (preemergence) and imazethapyr (pre and postemergence) phytotoxicity were not considered to be harmful to corn plants, when sowing occurred 90 DAA. Cucumber plants showed to be more sensitive to the herbicides than corn plants, especially to imazaquin. Symptoms disappeared 1Aceito para publicação em 20/01/97 e na forma revisada em 13/10/97.
