En este artículo se presentan resultados de investigación a nivel descriptivo de las estrategias que llevan cabo tres agrupaciones de periodistas en México que han surgido espontáneamente ante el contexto de violencia en su contra. Las agresiones en contra de los informadores en este país constituyen una problemática que se ha incrementado en los últimos 15 años, cobrando la vida de más de 80 periodistas en ese lapso y contabilizando por cientos otro tipo de agresiones como amenazas verbales, golpes, atentados, secuestros, desapariciones y movilizaciones forzadas, entre otras; lo que indica la existencia de una violencia permanente, sistemática y estructural. Tal hostilidad ha llevado a los afectados a organizarse en agrupaciones llamadas ‘redes de periodistas’, en las que reconocemos lo que Beck (2006) llama ‘prácticas profesionales críticas y alternativas’. Están organizadas en forma ‘subpolítica’ porque sale de los márgenes de los cauces institu- cionales para encontrar soluciones efectivas a problemas no resueltos por las estructuras oficiales. Mediante aproximaciones etnográficas caracterizamos a la Red de Periodistas de a Pie (Ciudad de México), la Red de Periodistas de Juárez (Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua) y el Consejo de Periodistas de la Cuenca del Papaloapan (Tuxtepec, Oaxaca), en el centro, norte y sur del país, respectivamente. La discusión final plantea una mirada crítica hacia las condiciones que no permiten que sociedades como la mexicana culminen su transición a la democracia por factores relacionados con la globalización, la corrupción, la inmovilidad de las élites y la existencia de una sociedad civil disminuida, conformando un contexto de alto riesgo para la práctica del periodismo.
