Earthquake Safety at LLNL 1 By combining technical understanding of seismic hazards with expertise in seismic engineering (geology, seismology, and nuclear and nonnuclear facility design), we have greatly improved the seismic safety of the Laboratory. Geology of the Livermore Valley 10 We have completed an intensive study to evaluate the various geologic hazards at the Laboratory; from this study, we find that the principal hazard is from the strong earth motion of earthquakes along faults of the San Andreas system. Monitoring Groundwater Quality at Site 300 18 Our new groundwater monitoring system at Site 300 has provided preliminary results on groundwater quality which reveal that our solid-waste disposal pits produce low levels of contamination. This report presents the unclassified activities and accomplishments of the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and the Advanced Laser Development (ALD) elements of the Laser Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for the calendar year 1987. The classified aspects of our work are reported elsewhere. The LLNL Laser Program is supported by the United States Department of Energy. Some of the activities in Advanced Laser Development are supported by agencies of the United States Depart ment of Defense.Our objective in preparing these Laser Program Annual Reports is to disseminate the results of our work for the benefit of the inertial confinement fusion, plasma physics, and laser communities. We attempt to provide, in one volume, sufficient detail to allow full understanding, to permit critical technical evaluation, and to make it possible for others to reproduce or extend our work. Therefore, we present here new concepts, the oretical analyses, computational results, the design and configuration of experiments, and analytical data-the results of our year's research.We have organized this report into major sections that correspond to our principal technical activities. Section 1 notes the highlights of the year's technical accomplish ments and briefly summarizes Program resources and facilities. Section 2 relates our work in target theory, design, and computer code development. In Section 3, we discuss the Nova laser program, including experiments, diagnostics, and data acquisition and management, as well as the laser system and its management. Our effort in the area of ICF target technologies and materials is described in Section 4, and in Section 5 we dis cuss our work on basic laser research and development Section 6 presents our re search on solid state lasers for high-average-power applications. Finally, Section 7 reviews the ICF applications we have studied this year.
