Abstract

Earthquake Safety at LLNL 1 By combining technical understanding of seismic hazards with expertise in seismic engineering (geology, seismology, and nuclear and nonnuclear facility design), we have greatly improved the seismic safety of the Laboratory. Geology of the Livermore Valley 10 We have completed an intensive study to evaluate the various geologic hazards at the Laboratory; from this study, we find that the principal hazard is from the strong earth motion of earthquakes along faults of the San Andreas system. Monitoring Groundwater Quality at Site 300 18 Our new groundwater monitoring system at Site 300 has provided preliminary results on groundwater quality which reveal that our solid-waste disposal pits produce low levels of contamination.
