Obgleich die erste Kunde yon der Orientbeule in die Literatur im Jahre 1745 (Pococke 1) gedrungen and das genaue klinische Bild sehon vom Jahre 1756 an (Russel ~) bekannt geworden ist, so gibt es doeh gegenwartig eine sehr besehrankte Anzahl yon wissenschaftlich durchgeffihrten Untersuchungen fiber die/~tiologie des Geschwiires, die wegen der Entlegenheit und geringer Kultur der Lander, wo diese Krankheit endemisch auftritt, aul~erst schwierig sind. Die Mehrzahl der Autoren studierte die /~tiologie der Orientbeule an einzelnen Kranken, die zufallig nach Europa verschlagen wurden, dagegen befand sieh die Minderzahl-die Autoren, welche fiber ein reicheres Material verffigten-in Verhaltnissen, die der Liisung der Aufgabe fiirderlich waren. Unter dem Namen Orientbeule (Hardy a) oder endemisehes Geschwfir heil~er Lander (Besnier und Doyon 4) versteht man allgemein eine rein lokale Erl~'ankung, die endemiseh in der tropischen und subtropischen Zone beider Halbkugeln (Algier, "Tunis, Morokko, _~gypten, Klein-und Mittelasien, Kaukasus, Hindostan, Brasilien 5) auftritt. Von einer derartigen Verbreitung hangt die groBe Anzahl der Synonyme ffir diese Krankheit ab. Wir ffihren hier nur die bekanntesten an und verweisen Interessenten auf die Monographie yon Heydenreich: P e n d e sches Geschwfir~ Sartenkrankheit, Kokanka, Jahring yon Elisabethpol, bouton d'Alep (Syrien), de Biskra (Algier), de Gafsa (Tunis), du Nil (s de Delhi (Hindostan). In Anbetraeht der Verschiedenheit der Gegenden, entspricht auck die yon Hardy vorgeschlagene Benennung: bouton d'Orient oder yon Heydenreich ,Tropengesehwiir" nicht der Wirkliehkeit und rationeller ist die yon Besnier und Doyon vorgesehlagene Benennung ,,bouton end~mique des pays chauds". Vor 2 Jahren war es mir gelungen, im Sekret einer Orientbeule einen eigentfimlichen Parasiten aus der Klasse der Protozoa, der yon mir und Dr. S. L. Bogroff 1 zusammen beschrieben war, zu entdecken. Die regetmiiBige Anwesenheit dieses Parasiten in den Beulen und seine haupt-s~chlieh intrazellul~re Lebensweise gaben eine gewisse Basis, ihn ffir den Erreger dieser originellen Erlrrankung zu halten. Um meine Untersuohungen mit neuen Beweismitteln zu erg~nzen, unternahm ich eine Reise nach dem Kaukasus, wo zwei endemische Herde dieser Krankheit, Lenkoran und Elisabethpolis, vorhanden sind. Die letztgenannte Stadt wird ffir die ~ugerste nordwestliche Grenze ihrer geographisehen Verbreitung gehalten. Uberhaupt abet ist diese Krankheit am meisten in der tropisohen und subtropisehen Zone beider Hemisph~ren verbreitet und besitzt aus diesem Grunde sehr viele Benennnngen (Bouton de Biskra, Bouton d'Alepp, Saccharaschankre, Cooanka, Sartenbeule, Pendinsche Beule usw.). Im Kaukasus ist sie unter dem l~amen ,,godowik", tatariseh ,,il-jarassy" (il-Jahr, jarassy-Beule) bekannt. Das klinische Krankheitsbild. Als Unterseheidungsmerkmale der 0rientbeulen, die dieses Leiden in eine besondere Gruppe einzureihen gestatten, sind folgende festzuhalten: 1. Die Krankheit hat einen bestimmten zyklisehen Verlauf, 2. sie stellt eine gutartige lokale Erkrankung der Haut dar, und ist 3. eng an eine bestimmte Gegend gebunden. Medlzlnische 2~undsehau. IIL} Die Erscheinungen der Symbiose und des Antagonismus zwischen den Bakterien sind nieht nut yon grol3em wissensohaftlichen, sondern aueh teilweise von rein praktischem Interesse. Wie bekannt, hatte sogar Metschnikoff, sich auf das Prinzip des Antagonismus zwischen den Bakterien stfitzend, Versuche gemacht, die Darmflora des Menschen zwecks Bek~mpfung der Senilitas praecox und einiger Infektionskrankheiten zu ~ndern. Aus diesem Grunde scheinen einige yon mir gemachte Beobachtungen gewisses Interesse zu beanspruchen, welche sieh auf die Symbiose zwisehen Sehimmelpilzen und pigmenthaltigen Bakterien beziehen. Maeht man auf einem ~hrboden gleichzeitig eine Aussaat irgendwelcher Pigment. bakterien, z. B. yon B. prodigiosus und yon Sehimmelpilzen aus der Mucor-, Penicillum-oder hspergillusgruppe (wit stellten Untersuchungen mit Mucor corymbifer, Aspergillus flavescens und Penieillum album an), so beobachtet man unter dem Mikroskop, wie das Myzel dieses Pilzes, die Kolonien der Bakterien durchwuchernd, dieselben allm~hlich entfarbt, indem es ihnen ihr rotes Pigment entzieht. Dabei treten in dem Teile des Myzelfadens, welcher dutch die Kolonie w~ohst, anfangs kleine, sp~terhin auch grSBere PigmentkSrner zum Vorschein. Stellenweise konfluieren diese KSrner in grebe rote Tropfen, wobei dieses Pigment sich allm~hlich fiber den ganzen Faden und fiber dessen Verzweigungen ausbreitet.
