The concluding chapter identifies some resources related to all topics covered in this book on natural resource management research. A short list of other useful books and web-based materials is provided.
This chapter describes the necessity of database software in data management. Some aspects of data management within Microsoft Excel and Access are discussed. The use of this database software is illustrated using a household survey on daily activity in Malawi. The chapter also discusses some ways to consider in adopting a database, including employing an outside consultant, working in partnership with an outside consultant and constructing an in-house database.
This chapter describes ways in which numerical information can be effectively transmitted in project reports and scientific papers. It further focuses on points most relevant to those presenting structured research results to an informed audience, reinforcing and complementing an authoritative source of guidance for the presentation of general statistical information, recommended by the authors (Plain Figures by Chapman and Wykes, 2nd Edition, 1996). Guidelines for the layout of graphs, charts and tables and for the presentation of statistical analyses results are given. Some basic points to consider in data presentation are enumerated.
This chapter concentrates on aspects of the design and analysis of on-farm trials that are different from on-station research, and additionally gives materials illustrating how the ideas are applied to other natural resource management contexts. It also describes guidelines on type of on-farm experiments, specifying objectives, choices of farms and villages, choice of treatment and units, and types of measurements to use.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
