This research aimed to discover the meaning of the Majelis Taklim for upper-middle-class worshipers and how simulacra-simulation and hyperreality processes occur in the Salafi Majelis Taklim. This research was a qualitative descriptive study which explored data through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data was analysed by Miles and Huberman’s analysis through three related sub-processes, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Jean Baudrillard’s simulation-simulacra theory was used as the primary research framework. The results of data analysis revealed that (1) Majelis Taklim became a mean of hijrah for the members. The hijrah referred here is the conversion from non-Salafi to a Salafi movement. It is an ideology that Muslims must return to the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Apostles to become more religious, increase social piety, and stay away from restrictions (usury, photos, polytheistic acts, etc.). (2) With media’s support, Majelis Taklim became a simulacrum for the simulation process, which ultimately led to hyperreality, especially signs consumption practices (fashion, worship groups). (3) Hyperreality occurred in religious life.

One of the key concepts of cultural studies in dealing with "living culture" is the experience and how to articulate it. The articulation of an experience must avoid pure meaning and the addition of excessive analysis. The pattern of interaction, lifestyle, and mind-set observed will bring the ethnographer at the correct level of articulation. In research, cultural studies develop ethnographic methods. Ethnography is a form of socio-cultural research characterized by an in-depth study of the diversity of socio-cultural phenomena of a society. The study was conducted using primary data collection with interview guidelines; research in one or more cases in depth and comparability; data analysis through the interpretation of the function and meaning of thought and action, resulting in the description and analysis verbally. Reality shows that ethnographs often express the experience of "large groups" and reveal less "disadvantaged" parties. Finally a new approach to the research of "new ethnography" is proposed that aims at developing a way of learning and writing that allows the ethnographer to more accurately understand and reveal and articulate the reality of others' lives. New ethnographic practices are often characterized by various strategies, such as collaboration, self-reflexivity, and polvocality. However, coming to its logical conclusion, the new ethnographic search to become a reality for the different realities of life makes one unable to judge between them.
Currently, in Indonesia, many religious institutions serve as a forum for women's empowerment, service, and advancement, in the form of educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools, Taklim Council, socio-religious organisations, and women's NGOs. All of them have a concern for improving women's standard of living. Therefore, the recitation is a religious institution deeply rooted in Islamic society, one of which is the JN Surabaya Taklim Council. This study aims to determine women's consumption practices in the JN Surabaya Taklim Council. The type of research chosen in this study is qualitative research with a form of qualitative descriptive research. In this study, the JN Surabaya recitation council members were research informants. The conclusion of this study shows that women's consumption practices in the Salafi Taklim Council are studied as objects or behaviours that appear, as values, and meanings, until they are continued as 'signs'. Consuming signs as a hyperreality and hyperreality occurs through a process preceded by simulacra, which becomes the simulation process's vehicle.
