A high suspicion for malignancy in chronic perineal fistulas associated with Crohn's disease should be maintained in spite of negative biopsies. Especially in women, the shorter duration of Crohn's fistulas prior to malignant degeneration necessitates an aggressive approach to rule out cancer.
We report a case of coexisting amyloid and neoplasm in a localized ureteral lesion. This case also represents the third reported instance of sequential bilateral ureteral amyloidosis. Right nephroureterectomy revealed amyloid and an in situ focus of low grade transitional cell carcinoma. Three years later amyloid in the distal left ureter was resected and the gap was bridged by a bladder hitch and Boari flap. Subsequent followup has been uneventful.
Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors derived from chromaffin cells located in the adrenal and extra adrenal tissues. Pheochromocytomas are diagnosed biochemically and localized using different imaging modalities. The definitive management is surgical resection. Brown adipose tissues are normally present during fetal development, with regression over time. Brown adipose tissues are thermogenic and usually located in the neck, mediastinum, and retroperitoneum. Here, we report a case of a unilateral pheochromocytoma surrounded by brown fat. The abnormal stimulation of brown fat noted on positive emission tomography scan (PET) resolved after the pheochromocytoma was resected.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
