This study evaluated genotoxic and cytotoxic potential of water samples through the analysis of Allium cepa root cells exposed to samples from five urban lakes of Alta Floresta, state of Mato Grosso. The samples were obtained in the dry and rainy periods, October 2014 and April 2015, respectively, at five distinct points. The collection points were as follows: Lake 01, located in MT 206; Lake 02, in Avenida Perimetral Rogério Silva; Lake 03, in Sector C; Lake 04 on Teles Pires Avenue; and Lake 05, in the Cidade Bela District. Bioassays using Allium cepa bulbs were taken from the water at each point, and comparisons were made with the negative and positive controls. The results found the presence of genotoxic and cytotoxic activities on the roots of A. cepa, indicating high potential in cell cycle inhibition. This result may also be caused by the influences of seasonal periods, taking into account that in the rainy season there is a greater transport of cytotoxic substances by rainwater, and in the dry season, a higher concentration of pollutants due to the reduction of water volume, resulting in a greater interaction of the concentrators as well as a greater concentration of the elements found in the water of these lagoons.
Number of chromosomes of Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Bignoniaceae)
Abstract. The genus Catasetum (Orchidaceae) currently has 194 orchid species distributed throughout Central America, northern Argentina, and southern Brazil, with Brazil as the largest producer with 103 species that may be epiphytic, terrestrial, or rupicolous. Aphids are insect pests that can damage ornamental plants such as orchids, either directly by sucking their sap or indirectly via secretions. Their secretions are attractive to pathogens and other insects, which then feed on the plant and cause a loss of flowers and leaves, spots to appear, reduced flower production, and flowering deformation. These defects can then reduce the value of the plant. When an aphid attack occurs, their ability to rapidly multiply and spread can cause major disruptions to disruptions to parts of the plant's life cycle. In this report, we examine how the aphid Aphis craccivora Koch infests Catasetum sp. and causes tissue death, decay of the buttons and base of the stem, and stains in the flowers. Thus, owing to the damage that insects of the family Aphididae can cause ornamental plants, this study aims to report the first recorded A. craccivora attack on Catasetum sp. in Brazil. Keywords: Aphids; Entomology; Orchidaceae; Ornamental plants; Pest. Primeiro relato de Aphis craccivora Koch in Catasetum sp. no BrasilResumo.
Averrhoa star fruit, popularly known as star fruit, native to Indonesia and Malaysia, belongs to the family Oxilacedaceae, is an ornamental and fruitful grove that gives rise to star fruit. The study of fruit and seed biometrics provides information for the conservation of the species with effective and sustainable use. In this sense the present study aims to study the fruit biometrics and Brixº content of A. carambola analyzing different populations. The analyzes were performed at the Cytogenetics and Plant Tissue Culture laboratory of the University of Mato Grosso State (UNEMAT), Alta Floresta campus. For biometric analysis, 30 fruits were collected from each population. Total length (mm), total width (mm), basal and apical measurements (mm), fresh mass (gr) and sugar content (%) were evaluated. Biometric data were evaluated by statistical analysis by Tukey test 5% probability, determined by the R program, version 3.3.2 with the aid of the ExpDEs version 1.1 package. Based on this study it can be concluded that the study of biometrics for the species A. carambola L is of great importance, because for this study the presented values of the estimated dimensions were high values for all measurements found except for the population three that presented low sugar content, being considered acid fruits. This factor may be related to soil characteristics, so further studies are recommended.
