The kinetics of the reactions of CH2Br and CH2I radicals with O2 have been studied in direct measurements using a tubular flow reactor coupled to a photoionization mass spectrometer. The radicals have been homogeneously generated by pulsed laser photolysis of appropriate precursors at 193 or 248 nm. Decays of radical concentrations have been monitored in time-resolved measurements to obtain the reaction rate coefficients under pseudo-first-order conditions with the amount of O2 being in large excess over radical concentrations. No buffer gas density dependence was observed for the CH2I + O2 reaction in the range 0.2-15 x 10(17) cm(-3) of He at 298 K. In this same density range the CH2Br + O2 reaction was obtained to be in the third-body and fall-off area. Measured bimolecular rate coefficient of the CH2I + O2 reaction is found to depend on temperature as k(CH2I + O2)=(1.39 +/- 0.01)x 10(-12)(T/300 K)(-1.55 +/- 0.06) cm3 s(-1)(220-450 K). Obtained primary products of this reaction are I atom and IO radical and the yield of I-atom is significant. The rate coefficient and temperature dependence of the CH2Br + O2 reaction in the third-body region is k(CH2Br + O2+ He)=(1.2 +/- 0.2)x 10(-30)(T/300 K)(-4.8 +/- 0.3) cm6 s(-1)(241-363 K), which was obtained by fitting the complete data set simultaneously to a Troe expression with the F(cent) value of 0.4. Estimated overall uncertainties in the measured reaction rate coefficients are about +/-25%.

Implants are readily applied as a convenient method of therapy. There is great interest in the prolonged release of active substances from implants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the dissolution kinetics of steroidal anti-inflammatory preparation (SAP) released from novel implants, and to test the influence of the technology on SAP release kinetics. The proposed long-acting preparations may overcome difficulties resulting from repeated injections and often visits to ambulatory clinic, as the stabilizing function of the artificial ligament would be enriched with pharmacological activity. The potential advantages provided by the new coatings of knee implants include the continuous, sustained, and prolonged release of an active substance. The study was carried out using a modified United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) apparatus 4. The amount of SAP was measured spectroscopically. It was revealed that the transport of the drug was mainly a diffusion process. The drug release kinetics was analyzed using zero-, first-, and second-order kinetics as well as Korsmeyer-Peppas, Higuchi, and Hixon-Crowell models. The highest values of the release rate constants were k0 = (7.49 ± 0.05) × 10−5 mg × min−1, k1 = (6.93 ± 0.05) × 10−6 min−1, and k2 = (7.70 ± 0.05) × 10−7 mg−1 × min−1 as calculated according to zero-, first-, and second-order kinetics equations, respectively. The values of the rate constants obtained for the slowest process were k0 = (3.63 ± 0.06) × 10−5 mg × min−1, k1 = (2.50 ± 0.03) × 10−6 min−1, and k2 = (2.80 ± 0.03) × 10−7 mg−1 × min−1. They may suggest the possibility of sustained release of betamethasone from the system. Due to the statistical analysis, differences were observed between most of the studied implants. Incubation, temperature, time of stabilization of layers, and the method of SAP deposition on the matrix affected the drug release.

Ab initio calculations at the G2 level were used in a theoretical analysis of the kinetics of unimolecular and water-accelerated decomposition of the halogenated alcohols CX(3)OH (X = F, Cl, and Br) into CX(2)O and HX. The calculations show that reactions of the unimolecular decomposition of CX(3)OH are of no importance under atmospheric conditions. A considerably lower energy pathway for the decomposition of CX(3)OH is accessible by homogenous reactions between CX(3)OH and water. It is shown that CX(3)OH + H(2)O reactions proceed via the formation of intermediate complexes. The mechanism of the reactions appears to be complex and consists of three consecutive elementary processes. The calculated values of the second-order rate constants are of 2.5 x 10(-21), 2.1 x 10(-19), and 1.2 x 10(-17) cm(3)molecule(-1)s(-1) at 300 K for CF(3)OH + H(2)O, CCl(3)OH + H(2)O, and CBr(3)OH + H(2)O, respectively. The theoretically derived atmospheric lifetimes of the CX(3)OH molecules indicate that the water-mediated decomposition reactions CX(3)OH + H(2)O may be the most efficient process of CF(3)OH, CCl(3)OH, and CBr(3)OH loss in the atmosphere.

The properties of sodium hyaluronate (HA), such as hygroscopicity, flexibility, the ability to form hydrogels, as well as biocompatibility and biodegradability, are beneficial for the applications in pharmaceutical technology, cosmetics industry, and aesthetic medicine. The aim of this study was to prepare HA-based hydrogels doped with active pharmaceutical ingredient (API): a cationic drug—lidocaine hydrochloride or anionic drug—sodium. The interaction between the carrier and the implemented active pharmaceutical substances was evaluated in prepared systems by applying viscometric measurements, performing release tests of the drug from the obtained formulations, and carrying out FTIR and DSC. The data from release studies were analyzed using the zero-, first-, and second-order kinetics and Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas, and Hixon-Crowell models. The respective kinetic parameters: the release rate constants, the half-release time and, in the case of the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation, the n parameter were calculated. The variability between the obtained release profiles was studied by calculating the difference (f1) and the similarity factor (f2) as well as employing statistical methods. It was revealed that the incorporation of the drugs resulted in an increase in the viscosity of the hydrogels in comparison to the respective drug-free preparations. The dissolution study showed that not entire amount of the added drug was released from the formulation, suggesting an interaction between the carrier and the drug. The FTIR and DSC studies confirmed the bond formation between HA and both medicinal substances.
