Plusieurs outils technologiques jouent un rôle important dans l'enseignement du français à distance à l'université Massey en Nouvelle-Zélande. Ils interviennent à titre divers : dissémination du matériel de cours, évaluation des activités orales et écrites, interactions entre apprenants et enseignants et suivi individuel des élèves. De manière plus schématique, ces outils permettent de réconcilier autonomie (de l'apprenant) et encadrement (de l'enseignant). L'analyse empirique qui suit s'attache à analyser deux types de « rencontres » entre apprenants et enseignantes : d'une part, les eTDs (travaux dirigés en ligne) hebdomadaires sur AdobeConnect, qui mettent l'accent sur la communication orale synchrone. D'autre part, les activités d'écriture individuelles soumises par les apprenants sur Moodle/ Stream là encore hebdomadairement, et 'corrigées' a-synchroniquement de manière informelle. Ce faisant, il s'agira de mettre en lumière les modalités d'usage de ces outils informatiques par les différents participants, mais aussi les difficultés et limitations inhérentes à l'usage du numérique dans l'enseignement-apprentissage du FLE.
