The detection of dysplasia in the gastrointestinal tract can be performed using optical microsensors based on thin-film optical filters and silicon photodiodes. This paper describes two optical microsensors that can be used for spectroscopy data collection in two different spectral bands (one in the violet/blue region and the other in the green region) for which two optical filters were designed and fabricated. An empirical analysis of gastrointestinal spectroscopic data using these specific spectral bands is performed. The obtained results show that it is possible to accurately differentiate dysplastic lesions from normal tissue, with a sensitivity and specificity of 77.8% and 97.6%, respectively. Therefore, the developed filters can be used as a tool to aid in diagnosis. The small size of the optical microsensors can enable, in the future, integration in endoscopic capsules.

The main goal of this study is to identify the possible relationships between the ability to identify patterns and the ability to play games, in particular mathematical games. The research methodology is quantitative and most of the analysis is concerned with the verification of correlation between variables. The analysis takes into account seven factors (besides the ability of pattern recognition) identified through a factor analysis carried out on data. With these tools, the authors have been able to differentiate games according to the different measurements. In this chapter, they disclose the important steps of this research as well as the results and main conclusions reached so far.

Um estudo realizado junto de alunos do 3.º ao 6.º ano de escolaridade permitiu verificar a existência de relação entre a força do jogador de xadrez e a capacidade de resolver problemas com padrões. Este resultado suscitou a curiosidade de verificar se essa relação se estenderia a outros jogos, como por exemplo os jogos matemáticos. Neste artigo apresentamos os resultados de um estudo envolvendo alunos do Ensino Básico participantes no Campeonato Nacional de Jogos Matemáticos, bem como o contexto que o originou. Nesse estudo procurava averiguar-se a existência de relação entre a capacidade de jogar jogos matemáticos e a capacidade de resolver problemas com padrões. Como resultado principal verificámos existir uma relação para os seguintes jogos: Semáforo, Hex e Amazonas.
