Medical device contamination caused by microbial pathogens such as bacteria and fungi has posed a severe threat to the patients’ health in hospitals. Due to the increasing resistance of pathogens to antibiotics, the efficacy of traditional antibiotics treatment is gradually decreasing for the infection treatment. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new antibacterial drugs to meet clinical or civilian needs. Antibacterial polymers have attracted the interests of researchers due to their unique bactericidal mechanism and excellent antibacterial effect. This article reviews the mechanism and advantages of antimicrobial polymers and the consideration for their translation. Their applications and advances in medical device surface coating were also reviewed. The information will provide a valuable reference to design and develop antibacterial devices that are resistant to pathogenic infections.
Objective
The aim was to investigate the characteristics of blood lymphocytes in patients positive for anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibodies (anti-MDA5+) in interstitial lung disease.
Methods
Thirty-eight anti-MDA5+ patients with interstitial lung disease were admitted to our hospital, and the lymphocyte count, lymphocyte subtypes and lung high-resolution CT were recorded. Some of the cases were examined by bone marrow aspiration.
Results
Compared with the control group, the blood lymphocyte counts of anti-MDA5+ patients before treatment were significantly lower (P < 0.05). After treatment, lung interstitial lesions in some cases were reduced and the lymphocyte counts increased, whereas their CD4:CD8 ratio decreased (P < 0.05). In contrast, lung interstitial lesions of other cases were exacerbated after treatment and the lymphocyte counts decreased, whereas the CD4:CD8 ratio increased (P < 0.05). In cases with exacerbated lung interstitial lesions after treatment, there were fewer CD4 and CD8 T cells than before treatment, and the change in CD8 T cells was significant (P < 0.05). Bone marrow aspiration biopsy indicated that there was no abnormality in the distribution of bone marrow lymphocytes.
Conclusion
Anti-MDA5+ patients showed a decrease in blood lymphocyte counts. The presence of anti-MDA5+ in patients with pulmonary interstitial lesions was positively correlated with blood lymphocyte counts but negatively correlated with the CD4:CD8 ratio. The CD8 T cells decreased more significantly than CD4 T cells in patients with aggravation of interstitial lung disease. The change in blood lymphocytes in anti-MDA5+ patients might be attributable to transfer of lymphocytes to the lungs to participate in the local immune response.
Objective: To investigate the short-term psychological function of opiate addicts who have undergone ablative stereotactic surgery targeting the nucleus accumbens (NAc) for alleviating opiate drug psychological dependence. Methods: The psychological functional status of 14 opiate addicts was assessed by standardized psychological tests both before and approximately 3 months after stereotactic surgery. Standardized tests included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised Chinese (WAIS-RC), the Clinical Memory Scale of Chinese (CMS), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). The evaluation of psychological dimensions included intelligence, memory, personality characteristics and mental health symptoms. Results: Compared with the preoperative state, there was no statistically significant difference in full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) postoperatively, but without Bonferroni correction a significant decline by 13.55% (p < 0.05) was observed in the Digit Symbol-Substitution subtest of WAIS-RC. The memory quotient (MQ) of CMS demonstrated a significant decline of 10.65% (p < 0.05) postoperatively. Concerning the participants’ personality characteristics, a significant postoperative increase (p < 0.05) was detected in the Psychoticism (P) trait of EPQ. The mental healthy severity indexes of SCL-90 were decreased postoperatively. After Bonferroni correction, however, there was no statistical difference between pre- and postoperative results on all assessments. Conclusions: Although the patients’ intelligence measures were not changed significantly, their short-term memory and attention appeared to decline postoperatively. In addition, there was a trend towards change in some personality characteristics postoperatively. The postoperative mental health levels of the patients increased, indicating a trend towards improvement. Stereotactic ablation of the NAc in opiate addicts may be associated with short-term negative psychological functions. Advisement regarding the safety of the new surgical modality and recommendations for further investigation are necessary.
Inflammation is associated with skeletal muscle dysfunction and atrophy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Theophylline has an anti-inflammatory role in COPD. However, the effects of theophylline on inflammation in skeletal muscle in COPD have rarely been reported. The aims of this study were to explore whether theophylline has an anti-inflammatory effect on skeletal muscle in a mouse model of emphysema and to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying this effect. In mice, cigarette smoke (CS) exposure for 28 wk resulted in atrophy of the gastrocnemius muscle. Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) and nuclear factor-κBp65 (NF-κBp65) mRNA and protein levels were significantly decreased and increased, respectively, in gastrocnemius muscle. This effect was revered by aminophylline. The exposure of murine skeletal muscle C2C12 cells to CS extract (CSE) significantly increased IL-8 and TNF-α levels as well as NF-κBp65 mRNA and protein levels and NF-κBp65 activity. This effect was reversed by theophylline. HDAC2 knockdown enhanced the activity of NF-κBp65 and increased IL-8 and TNF-α levels in C2C12 cells. CSE significantly increased the interaction of HDAC2 with NF-κBp65 in C2C12 cells. These data suggest that theophylline has an anti-inflammatory effect on skeletal muscle in a mouse model of emphysema by upregulating HDAC2 expression and decreasing NF-κBp65 activation.
