National audienceDans cet article, nous présentons la démarche de recherche mise en œuvre dans le projet Lingot, projet pluridisciplinaire dont l’objectif est d’instrumenter la gestion de la diversité cognitive des élèves pour faciliter l’apprentissage de l’algèbre élémentaire. Ce travail s’appuie sur des cadres théoriques issus de la didactique des mathématiques, de l’ergonomie cognitive et de l’informatique. Nous présentons la méthodologie de prototypage que nous avons mise en œuvre pour explorer les questions de recherche qui nous ont préoccupées et pour développer un outil de diagnostic de compétence. Les résultats de nos travaux concernent (i) l’analyse de raisonnements d’élèves en identifiant plusieurs niveaux d’indicateurs de la compétence algébrique selon les utilisations du diagnostic, (ii) une modélisation assez générale du diagnostic de compétence, et (iii) la mise en œuvre d’artéfacts informatiques pour mettre à l’épreuve et aussi pour faire émerger de nouveaux modèles.
