ABSTRACTJoaquina García Balmaseda (1837-1911) was a polygraph writer who devoted her entire life to the social condition of women. Although she lived in an era when neocatholic values still prevailed, during the reign of Queen Isabel II, she managed to raise the question of female education not only as a way to maintain the cohesion of the family unit, but also as a means to make sure that unmarried women are able to live a free and independent existence in safe and sound conditions. Her own life is a good illustration of this.
