Knowledge of the developmental changes of cardiovascular parameters in the genetic background of a mouse strain is important for understanding phenotypic changes in transgenic or knockout mouse models for heart disease. We studied arterial blood pressure and myocardial contractility in mice of the common background strain C57BL/6, aged 21 days [postnatal day 21 (P21)] to 580 days. Heart rate increased during maturation from 396 beats/min at P21 to 551 beats/min at postnatal day 50 (P50), and mean arterial blood pressure increased in parallel from 86 to 110 mmHg and remained constant afterward. Echocardiographically determined left ventricular myocardial wall dimensions (R = 0.79, P < 0.0001) and left ventricular mass calculated using the area-length algorithm correlated strongly with histomorphometrical measurements (R = 0.93, P < 0.001). Sarcomere shortening records from isolated ventricular myocytes used as a measure for myocardial contractility revealed a negative shortening-frequency relation under a pacing frequency of 2 Hz and a positive relation above 2 Hz. Shortening amplitudes recorded from P21 myocytes were smaller, and the shortening-frequency relation was less steep than in adult myocytes. A stimulation pause was followed by a negative "staircase" at pacing frequency of < or =6 Hz and a positive staircase at > or =6 Hz. P21 myocytes developed positive staircases at 8 and 10 Hz, and adult myocytes also developed them at 6 Hz. Blood pressure increase during maturation until P50 may originate from increasing single cardiomyocyte contractility.

BACKGROUND: Seasickness is a risk aboard a ship. Histamine is postulated as a causative agent, inversely related to the intake of vitamin C. Persons with mastocytosis experienced improvement of nausea after the intake of vitamin C. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether vitamin C suppresses nausea in 70 volunteers who spent 20 minutes in a life raft, exposed to one-meter-high waves in an indoor pool. METHOD: Double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study. Two grams of vitamin C or placebo was taken one hour before exposure. Blood samples were taken one hour before and after exposure to determine histamine, diamine oxidase, tryptase, and vitamin C levels. Symptom scores were noted on a visual analog scale. On the second day the test persons were asked which day they had felt better. RESULTS: Seven persons without symptoms were excluded from the analysis. Test persons had less severe symptoms after the intake of vitamin C (p < 0.01). Scores on the visual analog scale were in favor of vitamin C, but the difference was not significant. Twenty-three of 63 persons wished to leave the raft earlier: 17 after the intake of placebo and 6 after the intake of vitamin C (p < 0.03). Women (p < 0.02) and men below 27 years of age (p < 0.02) had less pronounced symptoms after the intake of vitamin C. Histamine (p < 0.01) and DAO levels were increased after the intake of vitamin C (p < 0.001) and after placebo (n.s.). The fact that the second test day was rated less stressful by most volunteers is indicative of habituation. CONCLUSIONS: Some of the data show that vitamin C is effective in suppressing symptoms of seasickness, particularly in women and men younger than 27 years of age, and is devoid of side effects. Histamine levels were initially increased after the test persons had been exposed to waves.

Das Tauchen mit reinem Sauerstoff unter Nutzung sogenannter SauerstoffKreislaufgeräte erfreut sich steigender Beliebtheit nicht nur im professionell militärischen Tauchen, sondern auch zunehmend im ambitionierten Freizeitbereich. Für das Tauchen mit reinem Sauerstoff können mehrere Gründe sprechen, so zum Beispiel die Möglichkeit, sehr lange tauchen zu können ohne Risiko des Auftretens einer Dekompressionskrankheit. Darüber hinaus treten keine Blasen auf, was beispielsweise bei Unterwasserfotografie geschätzt wird. Auch im Bereich des ebenfalls immer beliebter werdenden Mischgastauchens, mit einem deutlich erhöhten Sauerstoffanteil im Atemgasgemisch, werden die oben genannten Vorteile des Sauerstoffs ausgenutzt und insbesondere das Risiko einer Dekompressionserkrankung erheblich vermindert.
