SUMMARY :Saturated and unsaturated oligomers are formed by a side reaction during the thermal polymerization of styrene. MAYO haa suggested that these oligomers are closely associated with the initiation step.Recently the structures of the dimer fraction were published by BROWN. By independent synthesis of the dimers we could confirm his results. The main components of the dimer fraction are trans-and cis-1.2-diphenylcyclobutane in a ratio of 3: 1 ; also smaller amounts of 1.3-diphenylbutene-(3) and 1-phenyltetralin were found. The aim of this work was to clarify the structures of the trimers. The trimer fraction contains about 30% of 1.3.5-triphenylhexene-(5), the structure of which
A modified method for th_e determination of the number of isotactic sites C* and the overall propagation rate constant k, of propene polymerization catalysts with ''C-labelled carbon oxides is proposed: an excess of 14C02 or I4CO is added in the abscence of propene and alkylaluminium to a non-deactivated polymer sample drawn from the polymerization slurry. The specific radioactivity of the polymer as a function of the time of contact with the radioactively labelled inhibitor sharply increases within short times of contact (14C02 s 20 min, 14C0 I 5 min). This is followed by a slower further increase reaching a finite value after 5 to 7 h. The initial and end values differ by a factor of 2 to 3. The results are explained in terms of sites with different reactivity assuming that the total number of isotactic sites is determined only after long times of contact with the inhibitor. So far C* was determined with 14C02 or I4CO by adding the inhibitor during the polymerization in the presence of propene and alkylaluminium; c * was calculated after short times of contact with the inhibitor, whereas the further steady increase in specific radioactivity was exclusively attributed to side reactions caused by reaction with propene a_"d alkylaluminium.By this modified method we obtained for TiCl, . (1/3) AlC1, at 60°C k, = 13 dm3/(mol 1 s) and c* = 0,012 mol Ti*/mcl Titdd. Addition of a free Lewis base to the polymerization mixture increases c_' leaving k, unchanged. In contrast to this, if TiC1, * (1 /3) AlCI, is milled with a Lewis base k, can be increased by a factor of =2,5 yith lower or equal c*-values. The higher activity of extracted TiCl,-catalyst is due to higher k,and c*-values as compared to those using TiCl, * (1/3) AICI,. a) Vorgetragen auf dem IUPAC ,,International Symposium on Macromolecules" in Florenz, 7. -12. 9. 1980. 0025-1 16X/82/02 0489-16/W3.00 + TBPC) Katal. SUMMARY:Chain branching reactions influence the molecular weight distribution; the latter can therefore be used to calculate the number of branch points if the mechanism of the polymerization reaction is known. Instead of the complete molecular weight distribution the ,,ununiforniity" (pw/pn-l), which is more readily accessible both theoretically and experimentally, can be used.In radical polymerizations, two kinds of branching reactions occur (uiz. branching at end groups and a t other groups) which have a different influence on the distribution width. On the basis of papers by STOCKMAYER and by BAMFORD and TOXPA, the idhence of these reactions can be calculated. The combination of both effects allows the calculation of the distribution width as a function of conversion, using the characteristic velocity constants of the branching reaction as parameters. Comparison with experimentally determined values of the distribution width (obtainable from measurements of zw and H,) allows a determination of the numerical values of these velocity constants.
SUMMARY:A serics of 11 polyvinylacetates was prepared by polymerization to different degrees of conversion under the same conditions. On these samples, measurements of osmotic pressure and light scattering were made to obtain the number-and weight-average molecular weights. From the variation of these averages with increasing conversion, the coefficient of transfer to polymer CD, and the velocity constant of growth of the terminal double bonds, kN were calculated. At 60°C. the values Cp = 1.8-10-4, kN/k, -0,80 were obtained.Using these values, the number of branch points per polymer molecule was calculated as a function of degree of conversion.
