The effect of double inoculation of rhizobium and mycorrhiza on Leucaena leucocephala forage production and quality

This work was aimed at evaluating the effect of double inoculation with rhizobios Entrophospora colombiana and Glomus sp. On Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) plants 30, 60,90 and 120 days after germination. Agronomic, microbiological and chemical composition variables were evaluated. The treatment (T9) which included consecutive inoculation with C-202 E. colombiana and Glomus sp., displayed the best agronomic and microbiological response, reflected in the highest forage production and nutritional quality, greatest b3 protein and phosphorus content. The mycorrhizal strains evaluated presented different behaviour and there was little efficiency in the treatment without inoculation. This corroborates the need for using double inoculation with native strains from effective arbuscular mycorrhizal associated with L. leucocephala to achieve greater production for this legume.

The relationship between histological structure and chemical composition in leaves of forage grasses and legumes

A study was conducted to determine the relationship between histological structure and chemical composition in leaf blades of the forage grasses Bouteloua repens and Bothriochloa pertusa and of the legumes Stylosanthes scabra, Desmodium barbatum and Tephrosia cinerea. In grasses and during the dry season, sclerenchyma content of B. pertusa increased by 197.8%, and variation in this parameter explained 64% of the variation observed in in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD, P <0,001). In turn, B. repens exhibited the greater Kranz structure areas (P < 0,01) with an average of 19,63%. The mesophyll area was greater in B. pertusa (P < 0,0001) and it was observed that during the rainy season there was a rapid increase in degradable tissue content in this grass (P<0,01). In the dry season, crude protein (CP) content diminished in both B. pertusa and B. repens by 47,2% and 52,4%, respectively, and B. repens showed the lower CP content of both grasses (5,63%, P < 0,01). In the rainy season, the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of B. repens (63,98%) surpassed that of B. pertusa (60,18%; P<0,01). An inverse relationship was observed between acid detergent fiber (ADF) and CP content (R2= –0,94%; P<0,01) in the grasses. In both seasons, B. pertusa had greater IVDMD than B. repens (72,82% and 69,86%, respectively; P < 0,01), and this had a 0.94 correlation coefficient with both CP content and leaf mesophyll area (P<0,001). In both grasses, lignin content had a 0.89 correlation coefficient with the sclerenchyma area (P<0,001). Although it represents a small fraction of the leaf lamina, this tissue affected significantly the quality of grasses, having a 0.70 correlation coefficient with the effective dry matter degradability (EDMD; P < 0,001). In the legumes the area of sclerenchyma was greater in D. barbatum at the beginning of drought (10,09%, P<0,01). The greater CP content was observed with T. cinerea with 20.52%, followed of S. scabra with 16.80% and D. barbatum with 12,52% (P<0.001); NDF was higher (P<0,001) in D. barbatum (38,14%) followed by T. cinerea (31,14%) and S. scabra (30,15%). In all periods evaluated, T. cinerea had the lowest ADF and lignin content (P<0,001), and this resulted in greater IVDMD (79,71%) and EDMD (52,36%) values (P<0,001). The area of rapidly degradable tissues of the legumes had an inverse relation with ADF and lignin content (74.7% and 95.3%; P<0,01). In turn, the area non-degradable tissue had a direct relation with the lignin content (correlation coefficient = 0.81). Both the sclerenchyima and xylem area had a significant impact on IVDMD (correlation coefficient = 0.975). In addition, variation in xylem area explained 92% of the variation in NDF content (P < 0,01). The analysis of the histological structure showed to be a very useful tool on the processes of selection and management of forage species.
