Objetivo: establecer una aproximación teórico-conceptual que fundamente la acotación de una región como escala de estudio al interior de investigaciones enfocadas en temáticas de gestión del desarrollo social. Metodología: análisis de diferentes vertientes teóricas que conciben la región desde perspectivas geográficas, sociológicas y económicas. Resultados: propuesta de acotación de la categoría región como escala espacial de estudio y de gestión del desarrollo social. Limitaciones: la propuesta presentada no considera acotaciones de región desde perspectivas teóricas diferentes a las abordadas en la metodología. Conclusiones: la región constituye una escala apropiada para el estudio y la gestión del desarrollo social en dos sentidos; primero, desde una perspectiva epistemológica, al constituir un nivel de resolución espacial en el que pueden ser estudiados y analizados los procesos económicos, sociales y políticos; segundo, en un sentido ontológico, como una realidad geográfica que demanda ser comprendida en su complejidad para la planificación y gestión de su desarrollo.
