Este artículo aborda la trayectoria de la Unión Nacional Infantil (UNI), iniciativa del Partido Comunista Mexicano (PCM) a finales de la década de 1970, orientada a defender los derechos de la niñez. La creación y el fortalecimiento de esta organización —junto con la defensa de los derechos de la mujer, la libertad sexual y el cuidado del ambiente— fue un claro indicador de la modernización de la izquierda mexicana. Sin renunciar a su discurso tradicional centrado en demandas obreras y campesinas, la izquierda pugnó por poner nuevos conflictos y problemas sociales en la discusión política nacional. El presente artículo analiza el desarrollo de la UNI en el curso modernizador de las izquierdas mexicanas, en particular en las transformaciones internas del PCM.
El libro de Gerardo Martínez Delgado La experiencia urbana. Aguascalientes y su abasto en el siglo xx es una valiosa contribución a la historiografía urbana y regional, así como para los estudios del cambio tecnológico dirigidos a explicar sus ritmos y vaivenes. En similitud a lo hecho por Jaime Humberto Hermosillo con las emociones en La pasión según Berenice,[1] Martínez Delgado nos convence de que Aguascalientes —ciudad intermedia del occidente mexicano— es un territorio de límites porosos que convoca a repensar la relación campo-ciudad, las escalas de análisis y lo universal de los asentamientos urbanos. Desde este posicionamiento, los argumentos del autor no ceden ante al examen de lo particular, de la urbanización o lo moderno, y en su lugar apuestan por el estudio de la experiencia urbana, entendida como un conjunto de transformaciones en los usos, actividades y ocupaciones del espacio, aparejados con las ideas que las sustentan. Se consideran así, los cambios en los hábitos de la población y el funcionamiento de la urbe atendiendo sus relaciones con el exterior, en un periodo que va de 1884 a 1972; práctica inusual en la academia mexicana y en las pautas de la creación académica imperantes, que dejan poco margen a las investigaciones de largo aliento. Desde la historia global, el artículo analiza el intercambio científico que el Comité de Preservación de Variedades Indígenas de Maíz –conformado en Estados Unidos– promovió en América Latina a través de la serie de publicaciones: Races of Maize, destinada a la clasificación del grano. La impresión de estos libros se combinó con el procesamiento de 10 000 muestras que, entre 1951 y 1970, fueron refrigeradas en bancos de germoplasma. El artículo considera la complementariedad que existió entre las prácticas de preservación, clasificación y experimentación del maíz en el avance de la Revolución Verde, que operó mediante una estructura sustentada en la movilidad de profesionistas, la circulación de conocimientos y el intercambio de materiales; entre ellos, las publicaciones especializadas.
