La diabetes mellitus, se constituye en uno de los principales problemas de salud a nivel global por su comportamiento epidémico en las últimas décadas, es una enfermedad notoriamente afectada por los aspectos sociales, entre estos, las condiciones económicas del paciente. Con base a esta premisa, el presente artículo se propuso evaluar la condición económica familiar de pobreza como factor de riesgo en el desarrollo del pie diabético. Para ello, se aplicó una metodologia de tipo descriptiva – transversal con un diseño analítico observacional. La información se obtuvo a través de un examen clínico de los pies de 377 personas con diabetes que poseen historia clínica en los centros de salud Jipijapa, los Rosales, Puerto Quito y El Carmen. Entre los resultados se pudo constatar que las condiciones económicas limitan a las personas a cumplir con sus dietas saludables indicadas por el nutricionista, debido a los altos costos de los alimentos saludables que le son imposibles de adquirir, dándoles prioridad a las actividades económicas por encima de la enfermedad. Dentro de sus conclusiones se destaca, que entre los pacientes investigados existe un alto riesgo de desarrollar complicaciones en sus pies, al estar expuestos a una línea de pobreza en cuantía monetaria mínima que les permita satisfacer las necesidades básicas de un adulto.
