Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a usual way for analysing experiments. However, depending on the design and/or the analysis scheme, it can be a hard task. ExpDes, acronym for Experimental Designs, is a package that intends to turn such task easier. Devoted to fixed models and balanced experiments (no missing data), ExpDes allows user to deal with additional treatments in a single run, several experiment designs and exhibits standard and easy-to-interpret outputs. It was developed at the Exact Sciences Institute of the Federal University of Alfenas, Brazil. Stable versions of package ExpDes are available on CRAN (Comprehensive R Archive Network) since 2012. Based on users' feedback, the package was used to illustrate graduation and post-graduation classes and to carry out data analysis, in Brazil and many other countries. Package ExpDes differs from the other R tools in its easiness in use and cleanliness of output.

RESUMO -Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de determinar o efeito da inclusão de cal virgem e cloreto de sódio sobre as perdas fermentativas e a estabilidade aeróbia de silagens de cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o totalmente ao acaso em esquema de parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições, de modo que os aditivos foram avaliados nas parcelas (silagem sem aditivo; silagens contendo 0,5; 1,0 e 2,0% de cloreto de sódio; e silagens contendo 0,5; 1,0 e 1,5%de cal virgem na matéria natural) e os tempos de exposição ao oxigênio nas subparcelas. Após 75 dias da ensilagem, os silos foram abertos para determinação dos teores de matéria seca (MS) e da perda de MS por efluente e gases e aferição da temperatura e do pH da silagem. A inclusão de cal nas silagens, independentemente da dose utilizada, proporcionou maior teor de MS e menor perda de MS. As menores temperaturas foram observadas nas silagens tratadas com cloreto de sódio. Os aditivos utilizados, sobretudo o cloreto de sódio, foram eficientes em manter a estabilidade aeróbia da silagem de cana. It was used a completely randomized experimental design in split plot scheme with four replicates, so the additives were evaluated in the plots (silage without additive, silages containing 0.5;1.0 and 2.0% of sodium chloride; and silages containing 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5% of whitewash, on the basis of natural matter) and the time of exposition to oxygen was evaluated in the subplots. After 75 days from ensilage, silos were opened for determination of the contents of dry matter (DM) and the loss of dry matter by effluent and gases and checking of temperature and pH of the silage. The addition of whitewash into silages, regardless to the dose utilized, provides greater DM content and smaller loss of DM. The lowest temperatures were found in the silages treated with sodium chloride. The additives utilized were efficient in keeping the aerobic stability of sugar cane silage, particularly sodium chloride. IntroduçãoA ensilagem de cana é uma boa alternativa para uso na alimentação de ruminantes, por apresentar melhor qualidade nutritiva na época seca do ano, quando há maior necessidade de alimento volumoso, além de favorecer a uniformização da rebrota, racionalização da mão-de-obra, padronização de adubações e uso de herbicidas (Cavali et al., 2006). Entretanto, a silagem apresenta alguns entraves em sua produção, como a queda do valor nutritivo após a abertura dos silos (deterioração aeróbia), fenômeno decorrente da penetração de ar no silo. Inúmeros esforços têm sido dirigidos para conferir às plantas seu real papel e valor na terapia. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana, mutagênica, toxicidade, e os efeitos no crescimento e diferenciação de Herpetomonas samuelpessoai, do extrato hidroalcoólico de Bauhinia forficata. Para avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana foi realizado o teste de difusão em ágar, bem como a determinação das concentrações inibitória (CIM) e microbicida mínimas (CMM). O potencial clastogênico e/ou aneugênico, in vivo, foi avaliado usando o teste do micronúcleo em medula óssea de camundongos Swiss albinus. Foi determinada também a dose letal média (DL50). O extrato inibiu o crescimento de oito bactérias, mostrando-se mais ativo para Gram-positivas e não foi eficiente para os fungos, tendo sido ativo nas concentrações de 2000, 1000, 500 e 250 mg/mL contra os microrganismos testados. Os resultados mostraram que nas concentrações administradas (500, 1000 e 2000 mg/Kg), não houve aumento estatisticamente significativo de micronúcleos. Não houve ação no crescimento e diferenciação de Herpetomonas samuelpessoai nas concentrações testadas. Com relação a DL50, o extrato não apresentou toxicidade.

Anabolic substances have been increasingly used by bodybuilders and athletes with the goal of improving performance and aesthetics. However, this practice has caused some concern to physicians and researchers because of unknowledge of consequences that the indiscriminate and illicit use of these substances can cause. Thus, this study analyzed the effects of two commercially available anabolic steroids (AS), Winstrol Depot® (Stanozolol) and Deposteron® (Testosterone Cypionate), in the neuronal density of limbic, motor and sensory regions on the cerebral cortex and in CA1, CA2, CA3 regions of the hippocampus. A total of 60 Swiss mice were used (30 males and 30 females), separated into three groups: control and two experimental groups, which received the AAS. From each brain, homotypic and semi-serial samples were taken in frontal sections from areas established for the study. The results showed that females treated with testosterone cypionate presented a reduction in all regions tested and the ones treated with Stanozolol showed a decrease in some hippocampal areas. Regarding male animals, stanozolol led to a decrease in neuron number in one hippocampal region. These data allow us to conclude that supra-physiological doses of steroids used in this study, can cause considerable damage to nervous tissue with ultrastructural and consequently behavioral impairment. These changes could interfere with the loss of physical yield and performance of athletes and non-athletes and may cause irreparable damage to individuals making irresponsible use of anabolic steroids.

Ribeiro CM, de Carli ML, Nonogaki S, Nogueira DA, Pereira AAC, Sperandio FF, Hanemann JAC. M2 macrophages coexist with a Th1-driven profile in periapical cysts. International Endodontic Journal, 51, e87-e93, 2018.Aim To evaluate the participation of both Th1 and Th2 responses in periapical cysts by assessing the presence of M2 macrophages, as well as acute IL-1 b, TNF-a and IL-6 cytokines. Methodology Twenty-four cases of periapical cysts were selected. Immuno-expressions of IL-1 b, IL-6, TNF-a and CD163 were analysed in the cystic capsules in both superficial and deeper regions. Data were analysed with paired Wilcoxon test and Spearman correlation coefficient (P ≤ 0.05). Results There was a higher expression of IL-1b, IL-6, TNF-a and M2 macrophages in the superficial region (P < 0.001) of cystic capsules. All acute cytokines had significant positive correlations amongst them regardless of the cystic capsule region. Regarding CD163, positive correlations occurred only with TNF-a (P = 0.007; r = 0.537) and IL-6 (P = 0.018; r = 0.478) in the superficial regions of the cystic capsule. Conclusions M2 macrophages participated actively in the inflammatory response of periapical cysts and correlated with the expression of certain acute Th1-related cytokines. This illustrates the coexistence of an acute and chronic Th2-driven immune response in these lesions. Although M2 macrophages favour the healing process, their presence is not sufficient for periapical cyst regression, once an acute active response has occurred due to an infectious stimuli.

Avaliaram-se o consumo e o desempenho de ovinos alimentados com silagens de cana-de-açúcar tratadas com óxido de cálcio (CaO) e cloreto de sódio (NaCl). Utilizaram-se sete tratamentos: controle (silagem sem aditivo), silagens com 0,5; 1,0 e 1,5% de CaO e silagens com 0,5; 1,0 e 2,0% de NaCl, com quatro repetições. Os animais consumiram maior quantidade de matéria seca e de nutrientes digestíveis totais quando se adicionou 0,5% de NaCl ou ainda 1,0 e 1,5% de CaO. Quanto à fibra em detergente neutro e à proteína bruta, observou-se maior consumo quando se adicionou 0,5% de NaCl ou 1,0% de CaO. Não foi observado efeito da dieta sobre o ganho médio diário de peso. A adição de 0,5% de cloreto de sódio e 1,0% de óxido de cálcio à silagem de cana-de-açúcar resultou em aumento no consumo e melhora no desempenho de ovinos.
