This work aimed to develop a reliable and fast approach to estimate the plant tolerance degree to heavy metal (HM) phytotoxicity. Two independent experiments were carried out using tomato accessions, with contrasting morphological features, that were grown in a hydroponic solution containing different CdCl concentrations for 7 days. Plant dry weight and chlorophyll content (SPAD units) were evaluated, and tolerance degree to Cd toxicity was estimated according to the tolerance index (TI), which is a new mathematical formula based on plant biomass proposed in this study. Although with different magnitudes, tomato exhibited reductions in their dry weight concurrently with the increasing CdCl concentration. By contrast, chlorophyll content presented no standard response, decreasing and even increasing according to CdCl concentrations, indicating that only under certain conditions (particularly, at CdCl 50 μM), this parameter can be used to estimate plant tolerance to Cd toxicity. TI was efficiently able to segregate tomato cultivars with similar performance (based on the total dry weight of plants), and such segregation was optimized when the hydroponic solution contained from 25 to 50 μM CdCl. Within this range, data pointed at 35 μM CdCl as the best concentration to be employed in studies related to the tomato tolerance/sensitivity to Cd toxicity. In conclusion, TI proved to be a reliable estimator of tolerance degree to Cd exposure in genetically distinct tomato accessions. Moreover, TI can be used for this same purpose in plants under other HM-induced stresses.

The high cost and the low efficiency of fertilizers, especially nitrogen (N), are of major concerns in agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of N fertilizers sources in Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu (palisade grass). The study was conducted in Cerrado of Brazil to evaluate dry-matter yield (DMY), recovery of applied N (RAN), N use efficiency (NUE), and chemical composition of palisade grass in response to sources of N (ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium sulfate-nitrate, urea, urea with urease inhibitor, polymer-coated urea, and control) in seven harvests (100 kg ha-1 N were applied after each harvest). The N fertilization increased DMY and growth of palisade grass compared to control (without N fertilization). However, there was not any difference in DMY due to N sources. Application of ammonium sulfate-nitrate increased RAN. The urea, urea with urease inhibitor, and polymercoated urea improved NUE. Concentration of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was decreased, while concentrations of acid detergent fiber (ADF) and cellulose were not affected by the fertilizers. Crude protein (CP) content was increased with N supply, but CP fractions A and B were not changed, except in the fifth period of growth. The results indicated protected fertilizers (ammonium sulfate-nitrate, urea with urease inhibitor, and polymer-coated urea) are more recommended for the cultivation of palisade grass in the Cerrado biome of Brazil.

-The proper soil use and management are essential for a sustainable production, thus the pursuit for systems that minimize damages to the environment and improve soil fertility is continuous. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in soil fertility by the use and management of an Oxisol (Latossolo Vermelho-amarelo, SiBCS) in the Amazon biome. The soil uses and management systems evaluated were native forest, native pasture, minimum tillage system and conventional tillage system. The chemical atributes of the soil layers 0. 00-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.30 and 0.30-0.40 m were evaluated. The soil pH (CaCl 2 ) and the contents of organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnesium and aluminum were evaluated and the saturation by Al, effective cation exchange capacity and soil potential were determined. The highest pH values were found in the native pasture area, and the highest exchangeable aluminum contents were found in the layers 0.00-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m of the conventional tillage system. The highest phosphorus availability was found in the layer 0.00-0.10 m of the native forest area. The highest potassium availability was found in the minimum tillage system. The lowest calcium and magnesium values were found in the layers 0.00-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m of the conventional tillage system. The highest soil organic matter content was found in the layer 0.00-0.10 m of the native forest area. The nutrient availability for plants decreases in soils managed using the conventional tillage system. Soil uses and management systems of little soil disturbance are recommended to minimize environmental degradation in the Amazon biome.Keywords: Brachiaria brizantha. Minimum tillage. ALTERAÇÕES NOS ATRIBUTOS QUÍMICOS DO SOLO PELO USO E MANEJO EM LATOSSOLONA AMAZÔNIA RESUMO -O uso e manejo do solo adequados são fundamentais para a produção sustentável, sendo constante a busca por sistemas que minimizem os danos causados ao ambiente e que melhorem a fertilidade do solo. Objetivou-se avaliar as alterações nos atributos de fertilidade em decorrência do uso e manejo em Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo (LVA) na Amazônia. Os seguintes sistemas de uso e manejo do solo num LVA foram avaliados: floresta nativa, pastagem nativa e áreas preparadas por sistema de cultivo mínimo e cultivo convencional. As avaliações dos atributos químicos do solo foram realizadas nas profundidades de 0-0,10, 0,10-0,20, 0,20-0,30 e 0,30-0,40 m. Foram avaliados o pH do solo (CaCl 2 ), o teor de matéria orgânica do solo, os teores de fósforo disponível e potássio trocável, cálcio, magnésio e alumino trocáveis, sendo ainda determinados a saturação por Al, a capacidade de troca catiônica efetiva e potencial do solo. ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar o efeito da fertilização dos capins Tifton 85 e Jiggs com alguns macronutrientes sobre as características estruturais, produtivas e bromatológicas. Avaliaram-se duas forrageiras (Cynodon dactylon cv. Tifton 85 e C. dactylon cv. Jiggs) e cinco fontes de fertilizantes (três formulações NPK: 08-28-16, 30-00-20 e 20-10-10 e duas fontes de nitrogênio: ureia e super N), em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. O plantio dos capins foi realizado sem adubação, simulando uma pastagem implantada em condições de baixa fertilidade natural. As maiores produções (P = 0,009) e proporções de folhas (P < 0,001) foram verificadas no capim-Tifton 85, resultando em menor proporção de colmos quando comparado ao capim-Jiggs. As fontes de fertilizantes empregadas na adubação dos capins Tifton 85 e Jiggs alteraram o peso e a proporção de folhas e colmos, bem como a relação folha/colmo, número de perfilhos e produção de massa. Houve interação significativa entre os fatores de estudo (capim e fertilizante) quanto aos teores de MS (P = 0,024), FDA (P = 0,012), hemicelulose (P = 0,007), DMS (P = 0,012), NDT (P = 0,012), ED (P = 0,012) e EM (P = 0,012) das folhas, além do teor protéico (P = 0,016) do colmo. De maneira geral, a aplicação do fertilizante 30-00-20 resultou em menor teor de FDA nas folhas do capim-Tifton 85 e maior digestibilidade da MS, com maior teor energético também, e o fornecimento de super N implicou em menor teor de FDA e maior digestibilidade da MS das folhas do capim-Jiggs. Considerando-se a planta inteira, o capim-Jiggs apresentou maior teor de FDN (P = 0,017) em relação ao Tifton 85, entretanto, a concentração de FDA nesse capim foi menor (P < 0,001) do que o Tifton 85, o que implicou em maior digestibilidade da MS (P < 0,001) e aporte energético (P < 0,001). A aplicação do fertilizante super N diminuiu o teor de FDA (P = 0,026) dos capins, principalmente do Jiggs, implicando em acréscimo na digestibilidade da MS (P = 0,026) e aporte energético (P = 0,026). Embora existam diferenças entre os dois capins, as características produtivas e nutricionais tornam essas forrageiras excelentes opções para a introdução em sistemas pecuários. O fornecimento das formulações NPK 20-10-10 e 08-28-16 é indicado para o cultivo dos capins Tifton 85 e Jiggs por aumentar a produção de massa e melhorar a qualidade nutricional das forrageiras.
