Recebido em 4/7/06; aceito em 25/5/07; publicado na web em 3/12/07 ASSESSMENT OF METALLIC ELEMENT CONTAMINATION IN SEDIMENTS FROM THE SANTOS -SÃO VICENTE ESTUARINE SYSTEM.Three approaches were applied to evaluate metal contamination in 41 sediment samples from the SantosSão Vicente Estuarine System: normalization to Al, statistical analysis and sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). The results showed increases in the concentrations of Zn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr and Hg, which seemed to be associated with human activities. The levels of Al, Fe and Co probably were associated with crustal material or natural weathering processes. About 45% of the samples presented concentrations exceeding TEL-ERL, levels occasionally associated with adverse biological effects. Four of these samples presented concentrations above PEL-ERM, levels frequently associated with adverse biological effects.Keywords: sediments; metal contamination; normalization. INTRODUÇÃOA poluição dos sedimentos está intimamente ligada com a poluição das águas e tem origem em diversas fontes, dentre as quais se destacam 1 : efluentes domésticos, efluentes industriais, carga difusa urbana e agrícola. A situação é mais crítica nas regiões em que existem atividades portuárias, depósito de resíduos industriais e urbanos.Sedimentos têm sido amplamente utilizados como indicadores ambientais, porque possuem grande capacidade de incorporar e acumular elementos contaminantes. Como os sedimentos são levados pelos rios para outro curso de água ou para o mar, as análises dos sedimentos em vários pontos de uma região de interesse servem para rastrear fontes de contaminação ou monitorar esses contaminantes 2 .A ocorrência de variações nas características físicas e químicas do meio (como pH, salinidade, conteúdo de quelantes orgânicos, entre outras) pode liberar um poluente incorporado ao sedimento. Portanto, mudanças nas condições ambientais e dragagens podem transformar os sedimentos em fontes de contaminação 3 . Além disso, já foi comprovado que para a comunidade bentônica, além da coluna d' água, há diferentes vias de exposição aos contaminantes, como pelo simples contato direto 4 ou pela ingestão dos sedimentos 5 .O Estuário de Santos -São Vicente (Figura 1) é uma região particularmente muito exposta à poluição, por ter um grande parque industrial, ser portuária, populosa e, ainda, ter atividades de agricultura e pecuária. As principais fontes de poluição estão relacionadas às atividades do parque industrial de Cubatão, assim como às disposições irregulares de resíduos sólidos industriais, às dragagens do canal do porto e das atividades portuárias, às estações de tratamento de esgotos, ao emissário submarino, além das descargas de esgotos domésticos clandestinos e aos aterros sanitários (lixão) e, até, às descargas da represa Billings. Background, aim, and scope Contaminated sediments are a worldwide problem, and mobilization of contaminants is one of the most critical issues in environmental risk assessment insofar as dredging projects are concerned. The investigation of how toxic compounds are mobilized during dredging operations in the channel of the Port of Santos, Brazil, was conducted in an attempt to assess changes in the bioavailability and toxicity of these contaminants. Materials and methods Bulk sediment samples and their interstitial waters and elutriates were subjected to chemical evaluation and ecotoxicological assessment. Samples were collected from the channel before dredging, from the dredge's hopper, and from the disposal site and its surroundings. ResultsThe results indicate that the bulk sediments from the dredging site are contaminated moderately with As, Pb, and Zn and severely with Hg, and that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations are relatively high. Our results also show a 50% increase in PAH concentrations in suspended solids in the water collected from the hopper dredge. This finding is of great concern, since it refers to the dredge overflow water which is pumped back into the ecosystem. Acute toxicity tests on bulk sediment using the amphipod Tiburonella viscana showed no toxicity, while chronic tests with the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus showed toxicity in the interstitial waters and elutriates. Results are compared with widely used sediment quality guidelines and with a sediment quality assessment scheme based on various lines of evidence. Conclusions The data presented here indicate that the sediments collected in this port show a certain degree of contamination, especially those from the inner part of the channel. The classification established in this study indicated that sediments from the dredged channel are impacted detrimentally and that sea disposal may disperse contaminants. According to this classification, the sediments are inappropriate for disposal at sea. It should be emphasized that the poor quality of fine sediments discharged from the hopper dredge in the overflow process can recontaminate the environment. Recommendations and perspectives These findings will help to underpin improved planning of management strategies for dredging operations and sediment disposal in Brazil and other countries.

A B S T R AC TSediments represent an important repository of pollutants and a source of contamination for the aquatic food web. Toxicity tests using amphipods as test-organisms have been employed in the assessment of marine and estuarine sediments, together with chemical analyses. The present work aimed to evaluate the quality of sediments from six stations situated in the Santos and São Vicente Estuarine and Harbour System (São Paulo -Brazil) using acute whole sediment toxicity tests with amphipods (Tiburonella viscana) and chemical analyses of metals, PCB's, and PAH's. Other sediment parameters, such as organic carbon and grain size distribution were also analysed. Higher contamination levels were observed in the internal portion of the estuary, where Santos harbour and the industrial zone are located. The toxicity tests showed significant adverse results for most of the samples tested, and the sediments from the internal portion of the estuary presented the highest toxicity. The principal component analyses (PCA) indicated a close relationship between sediment contamination and toxicity. Positive correlation of these factors in the samples studied was used to establish the ranges of the chemical concentrations associated with adverse effects. Such ranges allowed the estimation of preliminary effect threshold values for sediment contamination, by means of multivariate analysis. These suggested values are: Cu, 69.0; Pb, 17.4; Zn, 73.3 (mg.kg -1 ); PAHs, 0.5 (mg.kg -1 ) and PCBs, 0.1 (µg.kg -1 ). R E S U M OO sedimento representa um importante depósito de contaminantes e uma fonte de contaminação para a cadeia alimentar aquática. Testes de toxicidade usando anfípodos como organismos-teste são empregados para avaliar sedimentos marinhos e estuarinos, juntamente com análises químicas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a qualidade de sedimentos de seis estações situadas no Sistema Estuarino e Portuário de Santos e São Vicente (São Paulo-Brasil), usando testes de toxicidade aguda com sedimento com anfípodos (Tiburonella viscana) e análises químicas de metais, PCB, e PAH. Outros parâmetros do sedimento foram analisados, como carbono orgânico e granulometria. Foram observados níveis de contaminação mais altos na porção interna do estuário onde se localiza o Porto de Santos e a zona industrial. Os testes de toxicidade mostraram resultados adversos significantes para a maioria das amostras testadas, e os sedimentos da porção interna do estuário apresentaram toxicidade mais alta. As análises de componentes principais indicaram uma relação forte entre contaminação do sedimento e toxicidade. As correlações positivas destes fatores nas amostras estudadas foram usadas para estabelecer os pesos das concentrações químicas que estão associadas com os efeitos adversos. Tais análises permitiram estimar valores limiares de efeito para a contaminação de sedimento através de análises multivariadas, identificando os contaminantes associados com o efeito biológico.
