Hematological alterations in fish are considered a useful tool to evaluate pathological processes resulting from the exposure to environmental pollutants. The whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri is a common species in estuarine areas and potentially exposed to many contaminants. In the present study, the hematological characteristics of fish collected at two sites in Baixada Santista (Santos Estuarine System - SES, a polluted site; and the Estuary of Itanhaém River - EIR, unpolluted site) del was analysed. The following blood descriptors were analyzed: number of Erythrocytes (Er), Hematocrit (Ht), Hemoglobin (Hb), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Fish from SES exhibited significant lower levels of Ht and increase on MCHC and Hb. Such differences are likely related to the different contamination levels found in these estuaries.
Alterações hematológicas em peixes são consideradas uma importante ferramenta para avaliar processos patológicos decorrentes da exposição a poluentes ambientais. Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) (corvina) é comumente encontrada em regiões estuarinas e eventualmente está exposta a inúmeros contaminantes. No presente estudo foi avaliado o quadro hematológico de indivíduos de M. furnieri coletados na Baixada Santista: o Sistema Estuarino de Santos, considerado poluído, e o estuário do Rio Itanhaém (controle). Foram avaliados o número de Eritrócitos (Er), o Hematócrito (Ht), a taxa de Hemoglobina (Hb), o Volume Corpuscular Médio (VCM) e a Concentração de Hemoglobina Corpuscular Média (CHCM). Nos peixes coletados no Sistema Estuarino de Santos, os níveis de Ht foram significativamente menores, enquanto os níveis de CHCM e Hb foram significativamente mais altos, indicando que os prováveis efeitos estejam atribuídos aos diferentes níveis de contaminação encontrados nos estuários

Few species are standardized and have been used as test organisms around the world in ecotoxicological assays. In the case of sediment assessment, there are only two amphipod species (Tiburonella viscana and Grandidierella bonnieroides) standardized protocols for toxicity test in South Atlantic region.In order to evaluate the possibility of using the epibenthic marine amphipod Hyale nigra in toxicity tests, a sensitivity test using spiked sediment method was applied, with cadmium chloride as a reference toxicant (CdCl2). Tests with environmental samples were performed to validate the test organisms. The samples were taken from Santos Estuary and Bay in state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The historical toxicity and contamination are mentioned in the literature. The results obtained in the spiked sediment tests showed little variation in the sensitivity of Hyale nigra amphipod with a mean LC50 value of 5.73 mg.L-1 (1.51 mg.L-1 -8.75 mg.L-1). In the tests with environmental samples, the results obtained were similar to those found in the literature regarding this sampling area. This study demonstrates the potential of Hyale nigra amphipod as a test organism in toxicity tests, once that the specie is sensitive and its results were similar to those reported in the literature on other species of amphipods that are already used in ecotoxicological studies.

ResumoOs sistemas de disposição oceânica de esgotos domésticos, ou emissários submarinos, têm sido historicamente utilizados em todo o mundo como solução para destinação final de efluentes urbanos, principalmente devido aos aspectos econômi-cos. Porém, o descarte no oceano, seja em águas rasas ou mais profundas, pode induzir uma série de impactos ambientais negativos, dos quais se destacam a eutrofização, a floração de algas tóxicas, a introdução de microrganismos patogênicos e a contaminação por substâncias químicas capazes de produzir efeitos tóxicos sobre a biota e bioacumulação. Desse modo, o lançamento de esgoto não tratado no mar não constitui uma prática ambientalmente adequada, sendo necessário o tratamento dos efluentes de forma a remover nutrientes, contaminantes e organismos patogênicos e evitar a degradação ambiental. AbstractOceanic disposal systems of domestic sewage, or submarine sewage outfalls, have been historically used around the world as a solution for urban effluents, in special due to economic aspects. However, release into the ocean, in shallow or deep waters, may induce a set of negative environmental impacts, as eutrophication, toxic algal blooms, pathogenic microorganisms introduction and contamination by chemical substances which are capable of causing toxic effects to the biota and bioaccumulation. Thus, the release of untreated sewage into the sea does not constitute an adequate environmental practice; then, urban effluents should be treated in order to remove nutrients, contaminants and pathogenic organisms and avoid environmental degradation.
