-The objective of this study was to identify secondary metabolite classes of tropical kudzu, perennial soybean and archer legumes through identification by phytochemical screening and confirmation by infrared (IR), 1 H and carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy of fractions obtained by organic solvents partition of crude extracts. These analyses allowed for proposing the presence of the following metabolite classes: reducing sugars, saccharides, saponins, cardiac glucosides, terpenes, coumarins, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids. The tannins, saponins, alkaloids, organic acids and flavonoids had special consideration because they are toxic compounds and can affect the animal metabolism.

This study aims to identify special metabolites in polar extracts from Urochloa humidicola (synonym Brachiaria humidicola) that have allelopathic effects and induce secondary photosensitization in ruminants. The compounds were isolated and identified via chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The compounds 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzoic acid, trans-4-hydroxycinnamic acid, and p-hydroxy-benzoic acid; the flavonols isorhamnetin-3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside and methyl quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucuronate; and kaempferitrin, quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside, and tricin were identified in the extract from the leaves of Urochloa humidicola. Two furostanic saponins, namely, dioscin and 3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-4)-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-2)]-β-d-glucopyranosyl-penogenin, as well as catechin-7-O-β-dglucopyranoside were identified in the methanolic extract obtained from the roots of this plant. This species features a range of metabolites that may be toxic for animals if used in food and may interfere with the growth medium, thereby inhibiting the development of other species.

ResumoObjetivou-se neste estudo avaliar a composição de cálcio, fósforo e potássio e, a relação folha/haste de quatro leguminosas forrageiras tropicais: Calopogonium mucunoides (calopogônio), Pueraria phaseoloides (kudzu tropical), Macrotyloma axillare (macrotiloma) e Neonotonia wightii (soja perene), submetidas a diferentes níveis de sombreamento artificiais (0, 30, 50 e 70%), nas estações de verão e outono dos anos de 2006 e 2007, respectivamente. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos completos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4x4, com quatro repetições. Utilizou-se o teste SNK a 5% de probabilidade para avaliar o efeito da espécie leguminosa e análise de regressão para testar o efeito do nível de sombreamento. Houve uma tendência de aumento na concentração dos 3 minerais avaliados independentes da estação do ano. Em contrapartida, ocorreu redução na relação folha/haste e um ligeiro aumento na área foliar específica do macrotiloma, kudzu tropical e soja perene (R 2 ≅ 40%), o que sugere pouco efeito do sombreamento sobre a morfologia das folhas destas 3 leguminosas, que por sua vez apresentam pouco efeito concentrador de minerais, além destas constatação confirma-se o comportamento anual do calopogônio, o que inviabiliza seu emprego como leguminosa forrageira para a estação de outono. O experimento foi conduzido no setor de forragicultura e pastagens do Departamento de Nutrição Animal e Pastagens, no Instituto de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, em Seropédica, RJ, para avaliar a produção de matéria seca (PMS) e a composição químico-bromatológica de três leguminosas forrageiras tropicais: kudzu tropical (Pueraria phaseoloides), macrotiloma (Macrotyloma axillare) e soja perene (Neonotonia wightii) em dois sistemas de cultivo (SC) (tutorado e livre). Utilizou-se um delineamento em blocos ao acaso, em um esquema fatorial (3 (espécies) x 2 (SC) x 4 (Repetições), em parcelas de 20m². A PMS foi significativamente diferente (P<0,05) entre os SC, sendo que, para todas as espécies avaliadas, o SC tutorado apresentou maior produtividade. Não foi observado efeito significativo (P>0,05) para os valores referentes a proteína bruta (PB) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) das leguminosas em cada sistema de cultivo. Já para os valores de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), houve diferença significativa (P<0,05) entre as espécies estudadas sendo que a espécie que apresentou maiores valores foi o kudzu tropical, seguido pela soja perene e o macrotiloma. Com relação à matéria mineral (MM), a interação (leguminosa x SC) apresentou efeito significativo (P<0,05). O maior valor observado no SC tutorado foi para o kudzu tropical, que diferiu das demais espécies. No entanto, quanto ao SC livre, o maior valor foi observado para a soja perene, o qual não diferiu para o kudzu tropical, porém diferiu para o macrotiloma.

The objective of this work was to characterize condensed tannins (CT) from six tropical forage legumes and to determine their biological activity. The monomers propelargonidin, prodelphinidin and procyanidin were analyzed, as well as extractable condensed tannin (ECT), protein-bound CT (PBCT) and fiber-bound CT (FBCT), molecular weight, degree of polymerization, polydispersity index, and biological activity by protein precipitate by phenols (PPP) of leaves of the legumes Cajanus cajan, Gliricidia sepium, Stylosanthes capitata x Stylosanthes macrocephala (stylo), Flemingia macrophylla, Cratylia argentea, and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, and of the bark of this latter species. Differences were observed in the concentrations of ECT, PBCT, PPP, and total condensed tannin among species, but not in that of FBCT. The highest value of PBCT occurred in F. macrophylla. Total CT varied from nondetected concentration in C. argentea to the highest concentration in M. caesalpiniifolia leaves that contain the greatest levels of PPP. No differences were observed for polymerization degree in stylo, F. macrophylla, and M. caesalpiniifolia. Leaves of stylo, C. cajan, and G. sepium, all containing between 20 and 50 g kg-1 total CT, should be beneficial CT sources, if offered as sole feeds in ruminant diets. The ratio of prodelphinidin:procyanidin varies from 10:80 (stylo) to 65:35 (F. machrophylla), and propelargonidin is only determined in C. argentea.
