Objective
This study aims to determine the role of the family in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for children aged 3–12 years during the COVID‐19 pandemic in the Qassim region in light of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 program.
Background
This study is important in defining the role of the family in promoting an active lifestyle for children during the COVID‐19 pandemic because the family is primarily responsible for promoting a healthy lifestyle for children.
Method
We evaluated responses of 320 parents completing an online survey about their children's physical health during the pandemic.
Results
The results showed a low level of children's physical activity and excessive use of electronic devices. Late bedtimes were evident and defined as midnight or later. As well, however, families knew the necessary information about COVID‐19 and maintained the children's preventive measures. The families were aware of the child's consumption of a healthy diet. They helped the child complete studies through distance education. The families supported the child's psychological well‐being and helped them develop some entertainment plans.
Conclusions
Although the family plays an important role in promoting the active and healthy lifestyle of the child, there is still a need for more awareness regarding the child's practice of physical activity, healthy sleep habits, and correct use of electronic devices.
Implications
Programs should be established to increase family awareness of the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the Saudi Ministry of Health regarding the child's physical activity, sleep habits, and the use of electronic devices.
Motivating children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle is a family mission and a responsibility shared by society. This study is important in developing the family’s role in promoting children’s active lifestyle. This study aims to develop the role of the family in promoting an active lifestyle for children in light of the Saudi vision 2030. The sample included 405 parents who filled out an online survey about their children aged 3–12 years. The results show families’ lack of interest in applying the WHO standards and the guidelines of the Saudi Ministry of Health regarding children’s regular daily physical activity. The families are reluctant to involve children in sports clubs. The parents desire to employ crews that enhance the movement and recreational activities of children in shopping centers and parks. The results also show that the presence of the father and mother together inside the house and their educational level have an impact on the effectiveness of the positive reinforcement of the active lifestyle of the children. To promote an active lifestyle for children, there is a need to determine why some families are hesitant to enroll their children in sports clubs. Additionally, there is a need to develop media and awareness campaigns for families in order to achieve the desired goals of developing an active lifestyle for children, which are approved by the WHO and Saudi Ministry of Health standards and are consistent with families’ low educational levels.
This current study aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence with its secondary dimensions and the skill of psychological counselor in dealing with client's resistance. The sample of the study consisted of 156 male and female counselors from different regions in Saudi Arabia. The participant counselors were subjected to an emotional intelligence scale and self-efficacy of managing client's resistance scale. Results showed a statistically significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence in its different dimensions and dealing with client's resistance. Findings also showed that emotional intelligence )total score( does not predict dimensions of engagement and disclosure resistance. Meanwhile, social interaction dimension can positively predict the skill of dealing with client's resistance. The findings of the study vary in terms of emotional intelligence and dealing with client's resistance among counselors in accordance with gender and age, whereas no differences were found among them in the effects of the educational level or where the psychological counselor worked.
