BackgroundThe relationship between tooth loss and nutritional intake is important. As people age, their diminished physical capacity and decreased income adversely affect their ability to maintain their teeth. The aim of the study was to assess and compare the chewing ability, oral health related quality of life and nutritional status before and after fabrication and insertion of complete denture amongst edentulous participants in a dental college.Material and MethodsNon Randomized Intervention study. The study population consisted of 42 participants (16 females and 26 males), aged 50 years and above. Prior to commencement of the study, informed consent was obtained and validation and reliability test of the questionnaire were done. The data for chewing ability, GOHAI and nutritional status assessment was recorded at baseline, 3rd, 6th and 12th month after denture fabrication and insertion. The statistical comparisons were performed by repeated measure ANOVA and Chi-square test. P value<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.ResultsChewing ability, GOHAI, BMI (Body Mass Index) and data from Food-intake questionnaire showed statistically significant improvement from baseline to 6th month but no statistically significant improvement was observed from 6th month to 12th month. Nutritive value of food (protein, energy and fat) showed no significant difference over a period of 12 months (p<0.05).ConclusionThus, it was concluded that the intervention (denture insertion) was effective in increasing the chewing ability, body weight, food-intake, and oral health related quality of life.

Introduction: Mishri is one of the form of smokeless tobacco, which is a roasted, powdered preparation made by baking tobacco on a hot metal plate until it is uniformly black, after which it is powdered. It is noted that mishri use is more commonly used by the women of low socioeconomic status, hence the need was felt to conduct this study among women mishri users of slums. Also, the consequences of mishri use are little known, hence an effort is made to find out its ill-effect on oral health. Objective: To assess knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) among women using mishri regarding its effects on their oral and general health. Materials and methods: A 6-month KAP study was conducted among 100 women who were using mishri. Snowball sampling was used. Oral examination of the participants was also done for oral potentially malignant disorders, such as leukoplakia, erythroplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, and hyperkeratinized pouch.

Caries lesion progression is highly dynamic process characterized by alternating periods of dissolution and redeposition of minerals in the dental hard tissue. When outcome of these processes overtime is a net loss of mineral, a caries lesion develops or progresses. However, when redeposition of mineral predominates, the result may be arrest of lesion progression or remineralization. Clinical observations suggest that caries lesion can be arrested at any stage of lesion development provided that clinically plaque-free conditions are maintained. Hence, the profession must become aware of the importance of identifying the early evidence of disease. The effective dentistry requires early identification of disease, early identification of individual at high risk of developing caries so that they may receive early preventive intervention. The profession needs understand pattern of disease distribution and its determinants and should put efforts for its early caries detection and preventive management strategies.
