This study aims to research the understanding of students about the importance of approaching the theme "Adolescent Health" in the school space and to investigate their knowledge about Sexual Education. It also presents the results of a dynamic developed with students on these two issues. The qualitative research was carried with students from an elementary public school in southern Brazil. As a data collection instrument, a questionnaire was applied, and the data collected was analyzed using the “Content Analysis” technique. A group dynamic was related to the adolescent health and the sexual education thematic subjects. Results indicated that the students recognize the importance of the school as a promoter of the adolescent health theme. Most students said to have knowledge about sex education. However, the knowledge cited by the students is more related to biological issues, without having a more comprehensive sex education dimension, such as gender relations, interpersonal relationships, body senses and self-esteem. School was cited by the students as the main source of information about sex education. During the group dynamics, it was possible to perceive the students' interest in participating in activities that address questions about health and sex education. It is concluded that the school is a significant space for the problematization on this theme. Furthermore, it is imperative to develop school-based sex education strategies that meet the needs of the students, in a personalized, human and qualified way, considering social, cultural and emotional aspects of the students.
Increased dietary carbohydrate consumption can cause several biochemical imbalances. Bauhinia forficata (BF), known in folk medicine as “cow paw”, is widely used because of its antihyperglycemic action. The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of BF leaves infusion in D. melanogaster fed with a high sucrose diet. For this, different sucrose concentrations were added to the standard culture medium and the BF tea was administered through filter paper. Weight variation was determined by comparing the weight of the flies at different sucrose concentrations with the control flies. After three days of treatment, flies were euthanized for biochemical analysis. Results showed that female flies fed 40% sucrose and male flies fed 30% showed significantly higher glucose levels compared to the same concentration group treated with BF tea. Triglyceride levels were significantly increased in females treated with 30% sucrose as compared to control. There was no significant increase in female weight as sucrose concentration increased. Superoxide dismutase activity was higher in females, although not significant. BF tea had no significant effects on insect body weight. In conclusion, the data suggest that a high carbohydrate diet may alter triglyceride and glucose levels in D. melanogaster and that BF tea may be helpful in lowering glucose.
Health promotion in the school context is a constant concern, since the school presents itself as a reference place for the acquisition of concepts and behaviors necessary for good self-care practices in health. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the effects of a health promotion intervention, through postural education, aimed at elementary school students. The research was developed with students of the 6th grade of a municipal school in southern Brazil, and it took place in four stages: I) application of the initial questionnaire (pre-test) to verify the presence of musculoskeletal pain complaints and the students knowledge about adequate postural habits; II) theoretical-practical interventions focused on postural education; III) anthropometric data collection, backpack weighing and calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI); and IV) reapplication of the initial questionnaire (posttest). The data collected were tabulated and expressed as mean and frequency or analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. 32 students participated. The results indicated that all participants had pain complaints in various daily situations. Regarding the weight of the backpack, five students presented backpacks weighing more than 10% of body weight. Regarding the proper postural habits, it was observed that the student's correct response rate increased significantly after the postural education intervention. It is concluded that the action developed contributed to the students to broaden their knowledge and provided subsidies for them to adopt positive attitudes to minimize the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and postural changes.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
