A variety of medications and dietary measures have been evaluated with greater or less rigor for their efficacy in reducing recurrence rates in stone formers. The guideline statements offered in this document provide a simple, evidence-based approach to identify high-risk or interested stone-forming patients for whom medical and dietary therapy based on metabolic testing and close follow-up is likely to be effective in reducing stone recurrence.

With a high success rate and a low major complication rate, PCNL is an effective and safe technique overall for minimally invasive removal of kidney stones.

Most ureteral stones will pass spontaneously. Those that do not can be removed by either shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy. Traditional blind basket extraction, without fluoroscopic control and guide wires, is not recommended. Open surgery is appropriate as a salvage procedure or in certain unusual circumstances.
