Un problema común en las paredes de mampostería es la humedad. Los morteros de pega y enlucidos pueden actuar como una barrera impermeable, reduciendo costos en reparaciones futuras. Para determinar la influencia de las fibras sintéticas de polipropileno y naturales de cabuya (Furcraea Andina) (tratadas con parafina) en la permeabilidad de morteros. Se realizó el ensayo de profundidad de penetración de agua bajo presión (UNE-EN 12390-8) y el ensayo de velocidad de absorción capilar de agua (ASTM C 1585-04). Para lo cual se fabricaron morteros de (cemento y arena) y morteros de (cemento, cal y arena) con adiciones de fibras de polipropileno y cabuya de 12 mm, en porcentajes de: 0.15%, 0.3% y 0.5% del volumen de mortero. Se determinó que las fibras de polipropileno y cabuya incrementan la profundidad de penetración de agua bajo presión, más aún si el mortero contiene cal. Por otro lado, la adición de 0.15% fibras de polipropileno, 0.15% y 0.3% fibras de cabuya, disminuyen la absorción capilar en los morteros de (cemento y arena). De igual manera la adición de 0.3% fibras de cabuya disminuye la velocidad de absorción capilar de los morteros en una etapa inicial. Los morteros de cal tienden a absorber agua a una mayor velocidad en la etapa inicial, y en la etapa secundaria su velocidad de absorción disminuye en comparación a los morteros de (cemento y arena). Adicionalmente se realizó el ensayo de resistencia a la compresión simple a los 28 días. Todos los morteros superaron la resistencia de 5.2 MPa establecida por la norma NTE INEN 2518, para morteros tipo N. Los morteros con 0.3% fibras de cabuya, alcanzaron la mejor resistencia, los morteros de (cemento y arena) con 7.905 MPa y los morteros de (cemento, cal y arena) con 7.517 MPa.
