The bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus, an Australian native insect, has become a nearly worldwide invasive pest in the last 16 years and has been causing significant damage to eucalypts (Myrtaceae), including Eucalyptus spp. and Corymbia spp. its rapid expansion leads to new questions about pathways and routes that T. peregrinus used to invade other continents and countries. We used mtDNA to characterize specimens of T. peregrinus collected from 10 countries where this species has become established, including six recently invaded countries: Chile, Israel, Mexico, Paraguay, Portugal, and the United States of America. We then combined our mtDNA data with previous data available from South Africa, Australia, and Europe to construct a world mtDNA network of haplotypes. Haplotype A was the most common present in all specimens of sites sampled in the New World, Europe, and Israel, however from Australia second more frequently. Haplotype D was the most common one from native populations in Australia. Haplotype A differs from the two major haplotypes found in South Africa (D and G), confirming that at least two independent invasions occurred, one from Australia to South Africa, and the other one from Australia to South America (A). In conclusion, Haplotype A has an invasion success over many countries in the World. Additionally, analyzing data from our work and previous reports, it is possible to suggest some invasive routes of T. peregrinus to predict such events and support preventive control measures.
Aim of stydy: Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Carpinteiro & Dellapé, 2006) is notable for its dispersion potential, and for its damage to a wide range of hosts of the genus Eucalyptus. The intense movement of people and cargo between continents contributes to the success of its geographical distribution on the globe and hinders the adoption of preventive measures. The celerity and precision in the identification of T. peregrinus, as well as its invasion and dispersion routes are fundamental for the implementation of measures to prevent new invasions.Area of Study: Park of Retiro in the community of Madrid, Spain, where T. peregrinus is present.Material and methods: In this paper we analysed this COI mtDNA gene in T. peregrinus, using samples collected in a park in Madrid urban area, to study the possible ways of introduction of this insect in Spain. This goal can be achieved using molecular methods to amplify and sequence the COI mtDNA gene, which is used as a barcode gene. Results: The results confirm that the population found in Madrid belong to T. peregrinus species and that all the specimens are from the same maternal lineage.Research highlights: We present the first molecular information of the population of T. peregrinus present in the country, and suggest and discuss possible routes of introduction of the species in Spain.
Insecticides Assessment on Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae) Bronze Bug Control in Laboratory Conditions ABSTRACTThe study aimed to evaluate the control efficiency of insecticides on Thaumastocoris peregrinus in the laboratory conditions. Therefore, 15 plants of Eucalyptus dunnii received the follow field spray: imidacloprid (78.8g ai / ha), thiamethoxam (37.5g ai / ha), lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam (21.2 + 25.8g ai / ha), lambda-cyhalothrin (24.9g ai / ha), and the untreated control only water. To determine the insecticides efficiency, we used a containment test, with E. dunnii leaves sprayed and collected at two different times. In the laboratory was used eight reps of leaves to adult and eight to nymphs by treatment individually placed in petri dishes; each repetition received 10 insect specimens. Assessments of alive insects were carried out at second, fourth, twentieth, twenty-fourth days after spray treatment (DAT). We conclude that the insecticides tested, on respective rate, presented efficient control of T. peregrinus nymphs and adults.
This work aimed to characterize the composition of the soil macrofauna in non-mined and mined areas recovered with native vegetation, Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden and Acacia mearnsii De Wild. plantations, in a coal mine. Five areas were evaluated, namely, three non-mined areas and two mined and recovered areas. Six soil samples per area were collected using a 10x10 cm circular probe, every month during one year. Defragmentation of the soil and removal of specimens was carried out in a laboratory. A total of 3,195 specimens from 11 taxa were collected. The most abundant groups were Hymenoptera, Isoptera and Coleoptera. There were significant correlations (p<0.05) between the total abundance of Isoptera and Coleoptera with some meteorological variables. The recovery process of the mined areas with black-wattle and eucalyptus plantations proved to be efficient because there was similarity of macrofauna groups between the non-mined, mined and native vegetation areas.
