This experimental and theoretical study of light scattering techniques addresses the questions of deconvolution of light scattering data (phase functions and optical resonance spectra) from droplets and the uniqueness of that deconvolution for the measurement of size and refractive index of microspheres. Theory and experiment are compared for single component and multicomponent microdroplets and for layered microspheres levitated in electrodynamic balances. Size changes of the order of 1 A have been measured by tracking resonance shifts of slowly evaporating single component droplets. For multicomponent droplet evaporation, which involves simultaneous size and refractive index changes, and for rapid evaporation, precision is reduced to approximately 1 part in 10(4) for each parameter.
The effects of insulin and adrenalin on the metabolism of14C-labelled glucose and lactate by perfused guinea pig hearts have been studied. In the absence of other exogenous substrates, adrenalin almost triples the amount of glucose oxidized to CO2, with a concomitant large increase in rates of glycolysis and glycogenolysis. Insulin has little or no effect on the rate of glucose oxidation, but greatly increases lactate accumulation, glycogen synthesis (from glucose), and amino acid labelling from14C-glucose.In hearts from starved animals, or in the presence of acetate, both insulin and adrenalin markedly increase the rate of glucose metabolism. When both insulin and adrenalin are present, both glucose and lactate compete favorably with acetate and endogenous substrates for oxidation.
The official final action method, 42.028-42.032, for determining amprolium in feeds was modified by a change in the preparation of aluminum oxide for chromatography. A premix containing 0.5% amprolium was collaboratively studied by the modified and the official methods. Compared with the modified method, 87.7% of the drug was recovered from the premix by using the official method. The modification makes possible the assay of premixes as well as finished feeds. The official final action method has been modified to incorporate this change.
