They formed in response to a complex array of geologic controls, notably the genesis of the sedimentary rocks that host most commercial energy resources. It is this genetic relationship between economic resources and environment that forms the basis for this book. Our grouping of petroleum, coal, uranium, and ground water may appear to be incongruous or artificial. But our basic premise is that these ostensibly disparate resources share common genetic attributes and that the sedimentological principles governing their natural distributions and influencing their recovery are fundamentally similar. Our combined careers have focused on these four resources, and our experiences in projects worldwide reveal that certain recurring geologic factors are important in controlling the distribution of commercial accumulations and subsurface fluid flow. These critical factors include the shape and stability of the receiving basin, the major depositional elements and their internal detail, and the modifications during burial that are brought about in these sediments by pressure, circulating fluids, heating, and chemical reaction.Since the first edition of this book in 1983, there has been a quantum leap in the volume of literature devoted to genetic stratigraphy and refinement of sedimentological principles and a commensurate increase in the application of these concepts to resource exploration and development. Two wholly new chapters, 11 and 16, have been added to accommodate these advances, two chapters (7 and 8) have been completely rewritten, and Chapters 3, 6, 9, 10, and 13 have been substantially revised.We review the spectrum of terrigenous (land-derived or siliciclastic as opposed to in-place or biochemical) clastic depositional systems and their component genetic facies, with emphasis on subsurface as well as field recognition. Fecundity (F) of Jasus edwardsii Hutton (Decapoda:Palinuridae) in the two Victorian fishing zones (Eastern and Western) was estimated from egg masses collected from 98 mature females (97–164 mm carapace length, CL) and was found to be related to carapace length (CL) by the equation F = 0·0316L3.359 (r2 = 0·8539; n = 571). Size at onset of sexual maturity (SOM), estimated from samples of the commercial catch (n = 3891) and analysed to determine the smallest size class in which 50% of females were carrying eggs or possessed ovigerous setae, was lower in the Western Zone (90 mm CL) than in the Eastern Zone (112 mm CL). Fecundity and SOM estimates and length frequencies in the commercial catch were used to estimate the relative reproductive potential (RRP) of each 5-mm-CL size class. The maximum RRP in the Western Zone was attributed to the size classes of 105 (38%) and 110 mm CL (25%), whereas the maximum RRP in the Eastern Zone was attributed to the size classes between 130 (40%) and 135 mm CL (16%). This study indicates that the current minimum legal size limits need to be reassessed and that separate management strategies for the two zones need to be considered.

Current annual landings of southern rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii, from southeastern Australia are around 5000 tonnes valued at A$140 million. The Victorian component of this catch during the 1998-99 fishing season was 550 t, valued at A$18 million. During the past 20 years catch rates have declined from 0.8 kg per pot lift to 0.6 and 0.3 kg per pot lift in the western and eastern management zones respectively. The fishery has been managed with input controls during this period, but at the time of writing, the direction of future management is not clear. A size-structured model was developed to assess risk associated with both effort (input) and catch (output) controlled harvest strategies in each zone. The stock-assessment model was fitted to historical catch data (in weight and by number) from 1951, catch rates, and the length-frequency by sex. The uncertainty associated with the estimates of exploitable biomass and egg production was assessed according to Bayesian methods. The output of the assessment formed the basis for projections intended to determine the risk associated with different future levels of effort and catch. Reference points based on estimated biomass and egg production relative to the start of the data series in 1951 were considered.
